If my eyes don't deceive me, it's a Honda portable gen set, wrapped in foam, in a plastic tote, in the bilge, next to batteries, with some sort of ill conceived vent system. On a Sea Ray 270 on eBay. Roasted Sundancer, anyone?

lol....how to roast a genny in a few seconds !

i built a box for a genny just the other week.

1.4 inch ply with a rigid foam insulation for sound......i left one side open,,,,,and the top adjar. the ehaust was ported.

with in just a few minits.....the foam melted away, plastic parts of the genny melted, (like the cover for the vu needle) and the genny didnt like it......it kinda ran rough, even toh the open side was the air intake and the lid was only half on........it was much quiter though !.......lol

" Somebody hold my beer and watch this!!!"

I had dreams of doing that on my last boat but after talking to the Honda rep and hearing the meltdown stories he had to tell I decided against it.

I like the part where he cut an 8" hole through his hull to attach the dryer vent hose, and another through his gunwale or somewheres aloft. Doesn't he realize that the salt water flowing in will harm his generator first, as the boat sinks?

People today are all about use it once and throw it away--as will be the case with the generator.

Hopefully the generator will overheat and die Before it explodes or sets the boat on fire! I bet the Coast Guard Inspection guys would have some fun with that rig!

That's funny and sad at the same time.

heh...they could have at least done like I've seen before and strapped the Honda generator to the bow pulpit

It would never pass coast guard inspection or a survey and I wouldn't quite condone it but it was a creative idea. Being air cooled it seems the foam and box would melt quickly (wonder if this unit had been run?). If it was sealed with a bilge blower blowing exhaust and hot air out and had a duct for cool air to come in it'd show some ingenuity. Then again a proper inverter system would probably cost less than the Honda pictured or a used marine genset could have been bought for the new retail price of the little Honda.

I understand the thought of using what you already have (counting the generator was purchased for something other than powering this Sundancer) but not so much in this case

It's really hard to say that this is how it's ran or stored while under way from just this one angle. I don't see any wiring actually leaving the plastic storage bin. To me it looks like the bilge blower tubes near the storage bin with a generator tucked between them. What's up with the three batteries... is this someone's attempt at a boat hybrid?

I think I see an orange extension cord coming out of the right side

That gives new meaning to the phrase "knows just enough to be dangerous"...

A vented fuel tank (outboard tank) is also placed in the enclosed compartment, probably plumbed to the genny. Just starting the genny could blow the boat up, one little spark and BOOM!

To go one step further, that tank even has a primer bulb. Primer bulbs in enclosed spaces are a big no-no by themselves and not allowed...

When I first saw this thread I said to myself...nah, they are just storing that genny down there for some future use. You guys have me convinced...this was a permament install!!!

Permanent, but short-lived, in this case.

I guess that can with the bulb is for a kicker.

I also noticed that his red battery selecter switch is just hovering over the batteries--you hold it in the palm of your hand and twist? shocking!

And then the bigger picture--I know big boats have 110 power, but there's something about the extension cord being used to run some appliance somewhere that gives me the heebie jeebies. Air conditioner? TV? battery charger? blender? Christmas lights?*

* People around here, temporarily and while under way, use generators for the lights in a boat parade. Topside.
