One month ago I bought a 1985 115hp vro evinrude eng….from a used outboard shop, with a 90 day warranty. The first time I put it in the water it would not go past wake speed, so I took it back and he fixed it. He said it was the module… After that it ran good the next weekend. last weekend I started to head out and once I got out past the no wake zone I gave it some gas, and it would not get out of the water. Then it kicked in, and about a ¼ mile from there it shut off. I took the cover off to see what was up and found that the engine started to seize up.I know that it was pumping water at low speed but did not see it at high. The motor still turns free… Now the good part I took it back and two days later I get a call saying that he took the heads off and it was my fault due to lack of oil……(the engine came with the vro disconnected), and he installed the motor + all wire and fuel lines. I know for a fact that I put enough oil in the gas…….
He wants me to go over to see it and explain to me how it is not his problem….Plus another reason why I Know there was plenty of oil is because the engine would smoke at idle and especially when slowing down. I do not trust this guy . Personally I think he sold me a dud and he knows it. NOW THIS IS WHERE ALL OF YOU EXPERTS COME TO PLAY !!! I have know idea what to look for when I look at the cylinders, he says they show signs of a lack of oil WHAT does that look like???? And is there anything else that could have caused this, especially something that is not my fault. Also the tilt has not worked since day one(he said he needed time to find another trim motor).
Thank you……………………………………………………………………..

Howdy BGagnon. Just how much is "enough" oil in the gas? Just how does this wrench know that lack of lube caused the problem? What is the condition of the impeller?

There are a lot of claims without supporting numbers or evidence flying around, here.

Get a lawyer.

Good luck.

JB

I put 1 1/4 qt per 6.6 gal of gas...
He said that by the look of the cylender walls they show signs of a lack of oil...he wont even talk to me about it over the phone he wants me to go over there (i'm sure to feed me every line in the book)could an engine running too lean or rich cause this?

hey b.gagnon -

i would be worried about that time frame myself. if this engine were something you got free or cheap then this forum would be the place to figure out how to spend all of your time and money analyzing and fixing it. you have an engine you spent (probably) a good bit of money on w/a 90-DAY GUARANTEE!!!! get that sucker to a real mechanic - and let him tell you what is wrong w/it. GET IT IN WRITING. take that writing to a laywer like J.B. says and get the lawyer to either write you a letter or call this gentleman you bought the engine from. that should scare him enough.... whatever you do - don't let the 90 days expire or you will be legally stuck w/a dead motor (if it is in fact dead).

good luck

mason

This guy is trying to put the screws to you. No way did your 5 minutes of running do anything that was not already done to the the engine. If you are in your 90 day period tell him to refund, or take the motor to a real mechanic as the reponse before said, and get a lawyer. Don't argue with the guy as he knows it was not your fault.

Get a sample of the fuel pronto.

It can be tested at a whole bunch of places. Look under the yellow pages "Laboratories-Testing" or call a Civil Engineering firm that does Environmental stuff and ask them who they use.

In a clear bottle, you can tell at a glance if it has oil in it or not, but it easy for a lab to test it for around $50. Might do it for pennies if they are sympathetic. You can also get another sample with the proper mix and compare the two.

If anybody else was around when you added the oil, have them write up a short note.

Do these steps and your dealer will know you are telling the truth and that you will not go away quietly.

I had a similar problem with a Stihl chain saw. Their rep took one look at the sample, told me I did not need to test it and replaced the saw right then.

Go there and grab one of your spark plugs, you can tell a Plug that had a 'no oil' mix VS an engine that had oil run through it. Even the threads on the plugs should have signs of oil on them. This is a sign that your motor had oil/gas mixture.

As a side note. I haven't met anyone who's had good luck with used/rebuilt outboards.
