There should be a model number usually on the mounting bracket somewhere.
Someone here can tell how to read the numbers or where to find that.

I have an Evinrude Spl 88 which the person who sold it to me was
a special edition motor to celebrate 88th aniversary. Year would
be 1988. I think for all practical purposes that it is 90 hp.

I am find that incredible...

they made 88 specials in many years...at least as early as 1987 all the way into the late 90's...

it is a gimmick they sold , 28hp specials, 33hp specials, 112hp specials, 48hp specials...

they were commerical type motors i had heard with less bells and whistles but based on the standard hp motors of just a little higher number

to the OP( thats you Lonnie!!)

do you know were to look for model numbers??

I found a serial and model number on the mounting bracket but havent had any luck corresponding the numbers with anything on the internet. Is that where the engine numbers are located? I wasnt sure if that was the engine numbers or if the mounting bracket had its own numbers. Thanks

It would be on a plate or sticker on the port transom bracket.

The numbers may also be stamped on a nickel-sized aluminum welch plug on the engine block. They are on the top of one of the cylinder banks on the crossflow engines.

boy, Charlie, someone really saw you coming, to come up with that story.

"I have an Evinrude Spl 88 which the person who sold it to me was

basically, the 88spl is a 90 hp with out the oil mixing system.

the 48 spl is a 50hp, the 112 spl is a 115hp.

the numbers I found look like ESBTLEDR & G 03982918, the sun has faded them a little, but Im fairly sure thats what it says. I should have put them up on my first post, just a little brain dead yesterday. Maybe some one will know what they mean.

well you did good just posting the number..

it probably reads: E88TLEDR

which says you have and
Evinrude
88hp
crossflow
longshaft(20")
1996
the last digit has an unknown meaning is unimportant to looking up info and parts

but I looked up that model and it appears you missed an S after the T and before the L

probably only means its white....is my guess....is your motor white?

Re: someone please help, Evinrude SPL 88 year model

For the record, the two characters before the last one indicate the year. In this case, "ED". The code word is INTRODUCES, where I = 1, N = 2, T = 3, and so on. So ED = 96, 1996.

I looked in better light, and after every body's insight, what I thought was a BB is indeed an 88. Thanks to everyone for the help on this matter. And also Bob, the engine is black. The correct model number is E88TSLEDR. Have a wonderful day and happy boating to all!! :)
