Hello Everybody,
I have a couple of questions, and i hope somebody can help out. I am/have been working on an old mariner 60 (see sig). In my last forum post, i talked about replacing the impeller, which I have now done, and when i put the lower unit back on, it wouldn't disengage from gear.
Now... I was playing about with it again today to try and sort it out, but once again, want to check things, ahhhh cautiousness
This image shows the shift shaft. Now this rotates, and selects the gear. From testing it today, the prop is only out of gear when there is pressure twisting it in one direction. If you release the pressure, then it slips back into gear... Is this normal?
My expectation was that it would be twisted one way and be in gear, twist the other, and be out of gear.
Also, I assume that my engine has no reverse gear? It is something i haven't actually considred before until today, and wasn't sure if it actually had one or not. Can anybody confirm if this is correct?
The next image shows the lower section on my water pump with the remains of a gasget that has really got stuck to the metal. I will be sorting this and replacing shortly.
You can see there is a space below the pump, where a seal is, or should be. The old seal had broken, and was flakey.. it actually came apart in 3 places, this will be replaced shortly too, however. I can't see what the point of this seal is, and what it is actually sealing? does anyboy know?
Now... Can anybody actually tell me, what the hole/gap/space is where lots of oil appears to be? I am assuming that it is part of the exhause system, and it is oily because it is a 2 stroke engine, and the oil seperates from the fuel and has to go somewhere.... I guess this is where it ends up.. Is this correct?
If you look through the gap, it overlooks the prop... here:
Now. I also went to do an oil change, however my oil drain screw doesnt want to budge..... AHHHHHHH! its one thing after another at the moment. So, any suggestions on the best way to remove a stuck drain screw?
Many Thanks
Alec
