Hey, whats up? I just got home from a 2 hour drive to pick up the first boat I've ever owned. It's a 20 ft Renken, It was free, needless to say not in the BEST condition, but from what I can see theres nothing really wrong with it. It has a Volvo 230 engine in it, i/o with a nice little cabin in it. I checked out the steering, seems to work fine. The throttle lever works fine. No soft spots on the hull that I could see. I'm a mechanic by second trade, and I looked over the engine and from a land vehicle standpoint it looks all good.
I do have a few questions I was hoping to get answered though.
First, Is there anything I should do before I attempt to fire the thing up on land? Hook a water hose up to it or something? May be a dumb question but I really don't want to destroy my new project before it starts.
Secondly, is there anything I should look for in the boat, hull or engine that's not obveous?
Third, I have to replace the wheel bearings in the trailer. How might I go about getting the boat off the trailer to jack it up, or do I have to? Would it be alright just jacking it up 5 or 6 inches on iether side to change the bearings?
Thanks alot in advance, I may be asking some dumb questions but I've never owned a boat before and this is really mine and my fathers dream, I don't want to screw it up before it even gets started.
