A former Australian prime minister has called Singapore a "rogue Chinese port" for ignoring appeals to save a drug smuggler from the death penalty. <br />Gough Whitlam, in office in the 1970s, made the remark in an interview about the case of an Australian national who is due to be hanged on December 2nd 2005.

I find the concept of a fair trial in China suspect.

Re: Some harsh words, what are the merits?

I've read quite a number of news reports on the subject, they all stated that the convicted man was in transit at the Singapore airport, if so, i fail to see how he could be convicted for trafficking heroin in Singapore when his destination was Australia.<br />I'm not in defense of the convicted man, i'm just trying to fully comprehend the application of Singapore's interpretation of their law concerning the matter.<br />Apparently the Australians are quite pissed off at Singapore's treatment of their citizen.

Wasn't Singapore where the kid from the U.S. got paddled a while back? Grafitti or something? I think that they said 'tough' even when Willie J. himself asked for leniency, to no avail ;) .....Singapore is its own soveriegn country....They do not mess around & if you are dumb enough to try to smuggle through there.......Roll the dice and take your chances.....This time it came up "snake eyes"..... :( ...Thanks for playing.....JK

Well,...... He was IN Singapore,....At Their Airport,..... And he Had the Heroin,........<br /><br />That sounds pretty Guilty to Me...........<br /><br />Even here in the States,... Most of the time,.. If there's a Bust,+ the Perp has Way More than can reasonably be consumed,..... <br />He also gets charged with "Intent to Sell"..........

It would be interesting for us to hear from some our Australian friends, as to what their opinion is of the situation.<br />That's if we can get them away from the cricket game for a spell :D

I support the death penalty for murder. This does seem extreme to me, but you should know the rules before you start cartng Heroin around . . .

You pays your money, you takes your chances when you break the law in a foreign country. Singapore has a low crime rate for a reason. I would bet the next person thinks twice before transiting Singapore with drugs.

Vlad, i think the only people that are pissed off are the politicians and the bleeding hearts. Most law abiding citizens would feel that justice is justice(no matter how barbaric you feel hanging is). I for one have 3 kids, and if some drug pusher wants to bring drugs here to poison my kids then I say Hang him. Just my opinion.

"Vlad, i think the only people that are pissed off are the politicians and the bleeding hearts"<br /><br />I also suspect that there is a lot of spin coming out of the various news organizations, they have definitely made it a rating booster. :(

They have immigrant citizens too . . . Are you suggesting that there are levels of valid citizenship? Pretty tough discussion here in the US too ;) Not sure where that ends up except that American Indians (yes, I know that label is not PC) are the only true US citizens and the Aborigines are the only true Aussie citizens.
