Okay, I just bought my first outboard motor and hopefully someone could fill me in on some of the details based on the serial and model number. I'm a total Newby so any info or direction would be greatly appreciated. It's a 7.5hp Gamefisher, model# 217-585932 and serial# 08-190699. What I'm looking for is the year, manufacturer, oil/fuel mixture and any other information that may come in handy. I paid $50 for this motor from somone I know who said that it starts and runs but he couldn't keep it running. I've seen similar issues on this forum before and he mentioned that he tried a different gas tank so that makes me think that the problem isn't an unvented gas tank. Is this motor worth spending a few bucks on or are these motors plagued with problems?

With the help of http://home.earthlink.net/~brixent/ I've found out that the motor is a 1980 Eska built motor with a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio. My next question shows the motor to be 7.5 TG. What does the "TG" refer to? Is this engine water or air cooled and how can I tell the difference?

I have no idea about the TG.
The engine (Tecumseh) is air cooled, but the exhaust leg is water cooled. The fins on the cylinder head (where the spark plug goes) is the dead give-away for an air-cooled engine. Water cooled engines have no cooling fins.
Use air-cooled 2 stroke engine oil, like chainsaw engine oil.

Is the air cooled engine a good system or do most people prefer water cooled. Are these Tecumseh engines reliable or do they have any cronic problems that I should be aware of?
