This is for those who like to troll...

When trolling as you pass over the fins they will naturally fan out on one or the other side of your boat..Unless you spook them ..

I will take a 7' rig and go straight out both sides at about 20'. Then I go straight out the back about 14' with a short stick..Many times as they fan out they will hit my lure...If they fan back in the short stick is there for them..

Great trolling method when fishn for the gator..Have caught bass and other fins when I do this to though..

Re: Some Fishn 101

GF I do a lot of trolling, mostly flat line. I like the line 100 yards back. I have a question about planner boards. I never used one before think I will try one this spring/summer. Is the planner board on its own line? Maybe you could explain the process. Thanks GF

I like the new avatar GF.

I use the same method when I'm fishing for bait (crappies) Two long rods off to the sides & shorter rod out the back. Three rods/person is the max the great state of Indiana lets us use. (which I consider OK since I know some states allow only 1)

This thread is a TROLL!Ha ha! :D

Booner,
Planer Boards can be a pain. But they are helpful here on Lake Erie when 'Eyes are suspended high. If they are down, Dipsie's will work too. Zebra mussells have cleared up the waters so much, it's actually to our detriment trying for 'eyes. They spoof alot easier now. So you have to get your line away from the boat.

We don't usually troll with more than 4 rods too much chance of tangles, but I have two downriggers to add, when set up I'll be able to stack the stern and run 4 off the back and then two off the side... either dipsy or planer. We don't troll with regular planer's. We use the one's that hook up to your line and coolapse when there is a strike.

Whichever way, we run anywhere from 50-150 back depending on conditions, lures, etc.

Re: Some Fishn 101

Must ta had a flash back yesterday...I was referring to yards not feet..Pretty much what KaGee said..I am not a guru on planers and don't use them to much.

On open water they are great but wide turns are a must as I have found out in the past..To many poles had be a hazard too..One time I had four out. Well a nice lunker hit my outside post. By the time it was all said and done she had managed to mate with every line I had out...My partner was not much help either..It was like he had no hands at all if ya know what i mean..

Do any of you folks troll in the prop wash? Now thats a heart stopper when a musky hits it about six feet behind the boat let me tell ya..

You crazy musky people. :) Your lures are bigger than the fish I catch.

I was watching Sportmans channel last week, the guy was demonstrating Figure 8's, sure enough, BOOM, about a 45 inch musky nails his lure. That's heartstopping.

I'll stick with bait.

(edit. oooh lookie 200th post & it's only taken 4 years to do it :D )

No. I'm member # 5046. Signed up a LONG time ago.
That was my 200th post. (now 201)

I fish for crappie & gills. If I'm feeling froggy I'll try for some 'eyes with the same ultralite gear.

Back on topic, trolling for crappie is more like drifting for crappie. But I do the same method. 2 10 foot rods off the sides & a shorter 6'6"out the back.
