Solvent and compressed air??

Hi everyone,<br /><br /> This may be a dumb question but since I don't know the answer I'm asking anyway.<br /><br /> My manual commonly refers to "cleaning with solvent and drying it using compressed air." What exactly is this referring too?<br /><br /> What constitutes "solvent"? Is WD40 solvent or what is it? Is compressed air only what you get from an air compressor or can you buy "compressed air?"<br /><br /> Any thoughts?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Shane

It depends on the part. If its a carb you would use carb cleaner, if it was a bearing or internal part there are more general less aggressive parts cleaners that are available from auto parts stores. Carb cleaners are usually a little more aggressive and volatile to dissolve the gummy varnish. Compressed air does 2 things, it removes the solvent and clears small passages of crud.

compressed air also blows carb cleaner in your face, so be very careful...I would advise safety glasses...just a Thought

Yeah what he said, and no open flames in the garage, most of this stuff is flammable and big clouds of solvent can go poof in a hurry!

Hi all,<br /><br /> What kind of carb cleaner would you all recommend? I noticed just 1 or 2 different cans at wal-mart today. Is this what I'm looking for or something different?<br /><br /> Also what about compressed air? Is this only accomplished with a compressor or is there another method that can be used?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Shane

Gumout, store brand, BerreymansB-12, or whatever.<br /><br />Compressed air in a can is available from the electronics store maybe even Radio shack. <br /><br />If you plan on cleaning carbs you might be able to use some of this info web page

In a pinch you can go to the air hose at a gas station and blow out a carb if you're sneaky.

If ya can't get compressed air, get yourself a container of CO2. It'll work for ya.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Re: Solvent and compressed air??

Until they started putting computers into everything I was a driveway mechanic. One year a friend asked me to take care of his air compressor while he was on a years contract in Saudi Arabia. I found it so handy that I bought my own the day after he took his back. I now wouldn't be without one. I managed to get an air chuck that has no pressure restrictions - great for cleaning. I got a thingy that is used for spraying trees that I use for pressure cleaning my boat. Lotsa other uses too.
