Hey guys

Firstly, I have an old old old Mariner 60, 2 stroke (197* something), electric start.

I am using the engine as a way to help me get my head around outboards, and is a bit of a project waiting to go onto my boat.

I had it running last week, as i was testing a new electrical system i have produced to run the engine (start/stop/choke/emergency cut out etc).

Whilst i had the engine running, I noted that it isn't pee'ing, so i stopped the engine because I didn't want it to overheat etc.

I have made the asumption that the impeller has probably gone, and needs replacing, because i have no idea when the previous owner last did it.

I started to remove the lower unit from the engine today so i can check it , but I have run into a massive problem.

I have managed to undo 4, of the 5 bolts......

the 5th, just will not budge! I have tried the following.

Spanner / ring spanner / socket / wrench / grips

It is a bolt with a 14mm head, and is one of the bolts on the side of the motor. It has started to round off on the corners, so i have decided to leave it alone for now, and have a ponder on the best way to approcah the problem.

I haven't been able to get a decent socket connection to the head of the bolt because there isn't much clearance between around the entire bolt. I managed to undo the other bolts using a ring spanner, but this now slips on the bolt that is stuck..

Can anybody offer any advice on how they would proceed?

help! :)

Thanks in advance to any replies

Alec.

A friend just suggested that I weld a bar onto the bolt, which should get me the half twist I need...

Then i can remove the bar once its loosened, cut it off, or grind off the welds...

It sounds a bit drastic, but it sounds like it would work!

Before i go down this route, i would like to see if there are any other suggestions :)

Far be it for me to spend any of your money, but you should look at Sears website for bolt remover. I looked and this one looks like it might be your answer...

You may be too far gone now, but initially when you had trouble, an impact wrench might have saved you. I'm not sure how much space you have around the bolt. If you have little/no space, you may have some success with the bolt/screw removers that you drill a hole down the middle and extract them that way. This is unlikely though because you'd lose all of your torque.

Good luck and let me know how you eventually get it out.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunatly, due to the rather crap design of the old engine, I can't drill it out, or use any of the conventional bolt removal tools, such as the ones you sent a link to. There is very little space around the head of the bolt, to the point that i couldn't even get the thinest of my sockets to fit as snug as I would have liked (I have several sets of different sizes).

The imact tools, again, due to the space limitations, i am unable to use.

Another real pain in the *** thing, is that below the bolt, sticks out one of the fins on the base of the outboard.... so, not only is there very little clearance around the bolt, but you only have approx 6cm of space between the top of the bolt, and a shelf (so large sockets, or a socket with a bar on, wont fit because they are too tall! ahhhhhhhhhh)

I had a thought, i remebered one of my friends a few years back, had some kind of bolt removal tool, it was like a pair of grips, but, had a ribon or some kind, that would wrap around the bolt, then you would squeeze the grips together, and it would form a REALLY tight seal around what was left of the bolt, and let you undo it. I seem to remember using them on his car, I am searching the web to try and find them, but I only seem to keep finding tools similar to the ones you have linked to, which alas, for my scenario, isn't really an option :(

Fixed!

Kinda......

Ended up having to sheer the head of the bolt off, took 30 mins with a lump hammer and a massive chissel.

I still have the bad part of the bolt to remove, but ive left it soaking in wd40, i may have to resort to heating it up, but im sure with enough time etc, it will come loose.

Anyway, I thought i would share with you the state of the impeller....

I have the O ring the blades of the impeller should sit on, but there isn't a single blade left! basicly, its completly screwed.

I've ordered up a replacement one today, so should be here soon.

It was pumping water when it was purchased, so hopefully the engine hasn't taken too much abuse without the pump, and will be ok. :)

Will find out when the new impeller goes in.

Use pb blaster or similar.Wd 40 isn't a anti seize,its a water displacement.
