Have an 85 Bayliner w/ an acq125a in it. First thing of note... I live at 7000 ft. Last year, the boat did not want to idle. Pulled the carb, bought a carb kit, and rebuilt it. Now it will not idle at all. Runs great above 2000 rpms, then dies. 'Have to pump it to keep it alive. Reset the breaker and points to dwell 63. new plugs, etc. Think that timing is pretty close, but can't get it to idle at 900 to be sure. If I need to advance or retard the timing for the alt, please let me know. Still, I defintately suspect the idle jet and/or idle settings as I can see the gas quits pumping from the main jets around 2000 rpms and thenb, not coincidentally, it dies.
Have read a number of posts on this problem, so I thought I would go through it for a third time so I did not look like a moron before I posted. It is definately clean. Not the problem. Really. The idle jet has 190 stamped on it. Not sure if the altitude is the problem for this jet or not. Have tried adjusting the idle screw in 1/4 turn increments all the way out. Does not seem to matter much, although it does stumble a bit longer before dying the further out it gets.
So, I am running out of ideas. On the carb, I have a couple of "mystery screws". One is called an "air jet". the other is next to it and is not labled in my Clymer manual. Not sure what the settings are supposed to be on these, but currently, they are snug. I tried loosening them for kicks. No change.
The only other thing of note is that the Clymer book shows a "Choke Tube". If this is something that sits between the carb and the cover, it is definately missing. However, from the book, it appears to be down in side the carb body. Still, it doesn't make sense to me that the idle jet sits above the downdraft without being inside some kind of tube. I thought that was necessary for the venturi principal to work. Hmm.
So, whats the problem? Would switch this carb out for another brand, but from what I have read, there is no substitute. Please help, I am really stuck.
Thanks.
