In Michigan the numbers stay with the boat unless it changes states.

I got cash for it.the story in the marina where it's at he launched it and went right to the bar. I'm clear of any envyromental damages it's on him but there is no oil or fuel leaking out. The stern was on bottom but the marina pulled it up to where it is now. there is a beach about 50 feet away so I would pull it up there and drain it but it's out of my hand's now. been there 5 days now.

5 days ???? Good grief! I can't believe the marina owner is telling him to get it out there. It may have actually been salvageable at on e point, but I guess the line where you say he "launched it and went right to the bar" says it all. Doesn't exactly sound like a serious boater. Probably just as well that he never made it on the water any way. He might have hurt himself or others. I wish I had that kind of money to throw away :/ It's a shame to see a perfectly good boat go down to Davey Jones' locker for no good reason. At east you got the cash! ;)

Same in MS, when I went and registered my boat they said the numbers stay the same, we just put it in your name. Note to self: attach plug to boat winch with bright colored marker so I don't make that mistake.

Hmmm, Maybe I will think about starting a salvage yard for Boats!

Same in MN. Numbers and current reg sticker just get transferred to the new owner. That is why you make sure to send in the piece of the title that the owner keeps ;)

A small boat like that only has the wallet sized card for the registration. I signed it for the transfer and he was to send in the paperwork. The hull numbers, stickers stay the same but I should have pulled off the square year stickers.:(

That's my guess too. Trying to figure out how to tell the wife where the money went. Maybe someone will tell him about iboats forum and he will finally return to salvage it. Before I read how close the beach was I kept thinking, just put the plug in it if it is not already and start the pumping the water out. Of course by not the battery is likely shot, but surely there are other boaters out there watching that would come help.

Re: Sold my old boat and now it's a bit wet!

my brother used to live with me back in the "Bachelors from Hell" days. He had sold a small aluminum boat and 2 years later I got a call from Texas Game Warden at 6AM on Sunday saying they found his swamped boat half sunk in a river in South Texas a few hours away. He wanted to know if I knew where he was? i told him it had been sold 2 years prior and my brother was asleep in his bed. The officer asked if I knew the owner and of course we did not.
I sold my Wellcraft 2 years ago and got the renewal app. in the mail not long ago. Hmmmm?

So the guy put his new boat in the water and then started drinking to celebrate the boat ride he was going to take? That is insane and only an alcoholic would do such a thing. He would do that you know he would also drink and drive his car, He needs to be in jail and its a good thing the boat sank.I hope it cost him plenty. People like that ruin it for the rest of us.

Wow, you sound quite vindictive. I bet your much fun at parties. You have taken a comment from someone at the marina and come to your own conclusion that the owner is an alcoholic, drinks and drives, should be in jail, and ruins the reputation of boaters everywhere.
I say that all marinas that have bars should be shut down as it just encourages drinking.

Amen. It's judgmental people like that who drive people to drink, not bars!

Ever think he went to the "bar" to get lunch? Jeez.
