I am looking at buying a new prop, anythoughts on the brand solas. I see they have SS and Alum. I have a 17 foot sportcraft, with a 90hp L6 merc. Just wanted to see what people thought of that brand. Thanks

while my boat is quite different than yours and so the specific prop is likely not the best for yours, I bought a solas titan 4 for pulling skiirs and boarders and as an "inexpensive" second prop. I can't be more pleased with the overall quality - especially for the money. It ran smooth, was well finished and the hub system has given no problems. If there comes a time when solas offers a prop that fits what I'm looking for at the time, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

I had an SS that I was perfectly happy with and one that was out of balance. Was able to return it for a refund though.

There's a "review" in the stickies for the Solas Rubex series. I recently picked one up due to some prop damage, I've yet to try it though. Was hoping to do so later today.

Looking at it, it seems well made, plus I like the interchangeable aspect of the hub system. Compared to the factory 14.5x19 on my Mercruiser the Solas seems to have a more aggressive rake and just a tiny bit less surface area on the blades.

If I get it out on the water I'll post back.

I am also ready to reprop, but could not find anything on my current prop anywhere for the size. The iboats site was good but not comprehensive. Did some more searching and found this place. This is a keeper. Let me enter my motor specs, hull make and model, how much gas is aboard, how many people, etc.

It gave me two sizes in both aluminum and stainless that would be compatible.

Assuming you've done all the research, know your current performance and what type of prop you need, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Solas.

I swapped my 3-blade aluminum prop for a Titan 4-blade stainless and have been very pleased with the workmanship and performance of the prop. My boat is much different from yours, but from what I've seen myself and read here, Solas seems to make a quality product.

Re: Solas Prop opinions please

I am still new to boating world, and this is my fish bigger fishing boat (for around where i live) I am use to my smaller boat with a 25 hp mariner. But since i got my bigger boat and repowered it with the 90 merc, this is my first time ever having to spend alot of time thinking of the proper prop, because i know you guys know that +300$ for a SS prop is alot of money.

I have solas prop on my 25hp and my 9.9 i never had a SS from them. From what i am hearing it sound like i can not go wrong with my choice.

Heres a question i know it does not fit my original topic but ill put it out anyway. My boat hull weights 900lbs, the merc 300lbs, kicker with all the crap 100lbs, and say 120lbs of fuel and 100lbs of other crap 180lbs of me so around 1900lbs and the motor revs to 5200ish rpm pushing me to about 34mph.
Iboats says my motor should rev to 5000-6000 i have a michigan wheel alum. 17 pitch (i do not like it It came with the motor) any thoughts on going to a 15 pitch SS because i will have at least 2 other on board when going fishing say another 300-400lbs. Or just get a 17 SS? If you think i should go 3 blade or four blade? I have been rolling this around in my head for a while now.

Re: Solas Prop opinions please

I'm a newbie myself, but did a ton of research and reading here before I bought my prop.

First, is your motor in good tune?
Second, have you tried raising the motor on the transom an inch at a time until ventilation becomes an issue?

Basically, once you've got the boat running as well as you can with the current prop, that's when you should pull all the relevant facts together and start a new thread. People here will want to know:

1. Mercury's recommended wot rpm range for your motor
2. Your current wot rpm and speed with normal load (according to what you wrote, you should probably get another person or 2 on the boat before you measure this- and use a gps to get accurate speed).
3. What are you trying to achieve? Top speed? Cruising efficiency? Pulling skiers and wakeboarders?
4. Appears that you've narrowed the brand to Solas, and nobody's giving you any argument there, so that'll help narrow your model choices. That's good- there're so many props out there it makes your head spin :)

Generally, every 1" decrease in pitch will raise your rpm by 150-200. In addition, if you go from aluminum to stainless, you'll want to drop one more inch because stainless doesn't flex as much.

I was trying to go from 5250 rpm with a 3-blade aluminum, to 5500 rpm with a 4-blade stainless (I already knew I wanted the stern lift and cruising efficiency of a 4-blade for my big, heavy boat). I dropped from 17p on the original prop to 15p on a Titan and freakin' nailed it - 5475 rpm and a 1.5 mph increase at the top end. The answer is out there- take it step by step and you'll find what you need.

I just bought a Solas Rubex. Took out my boat yesterday with new prop and all I can say is, why did I wait so long. Went from a vortex to solas, can truely tell a difference.

Re: Solas Prop opinions please

I forgot to post back when I got to try out the new Solas Rubex, so here it is.

Went from a factory 14.5x19, I think it was a Black Max to a 14.5x19 Solas Rubex. It had a decent holeshot, I could pull a tube or skier just fine. Now, the boat nearly stands on end on takeoff and I have not lost any top end speed.

As I posted in the top of this forum, the Rubex series really impressed me....both in quality and performance compared to ANY other alum prop built. The casting is second to none other I've seen.

I wanted to re-prop with a BRP Rebel on my 22' Center Console (Evinrude 200 Hp O-Pro) , for better mileage and lower rpm planing speed, which is what the BRP Rebel was designed for. Trouble was, I couldn't get near one for less than $450.00. Solas makes all the propellers for BRP, the Viper, the Rebel, etc.

THEY ALSO make these props under their own brand "Solas" under different names (e.g. BRP Viper = SOLAS Titan, BRP Rebel = SOLAS Lexor.) I bought the Lexor and saved a bundle because its the Rebel's step cousin, but the same prop. Runs great! Aftermarket is always cheaper than OEM
