1993 johnson 60hp model j60tletd. i'm rebuilding my carbs for the first time following the manual. I have one carb completely disassembled per manual. Now, should I soak both the bowl and the top part of the carb overnight in carb cleaner? I bought a gallon of GUNK i believe at an auto parts store with the basket and all.

thanks in advance.

Re: soaking carbs

Yes, both pieces but time of soak depends on how gummed up the carbs are. If they appear clean then 30-40 minutes will probably do. When the do the rinse and blow them out with compressed air you can see all the jets. If they aren't sparkiling clean then put them back into the soak while a while longer. Don't get carb cleaner or the soak on any rubber parts like gaskets or O-rings.

Re: soaking carbs

one more question, please.

with spark plugs removed and carbs disassembled, should i do anything else as far as cleaning goes? i.e. should i spray tuning oil into the spark plug holes and rotate the fly wheel and let that soak in there to decarb the chambers? what about inside the engine where the carbs fit onto the mounting studs, should i spray carb cleaner throughout that as well?

i just want to be thorough as i have it all apart.

thanks in advance. any other tips would be appreciated.

Re: soaking carbs

spraying carb cleaner in the engine will remove the residual oil for the the next start up. after you get it running do a seafoam deep creep treatment. the neighbor will hate you because of the smoke. but you will be amazed by the results. and for later maintainance use seafoam fuel additive,in your gas.
