I just read an article (older) describing it as the only change/improvement in drives in a long time.

So what is an L-Drive and what is so bad about it?

thanks,

I have an "L" drive. It's basically an outdrive that makes an outboard motor into an I/O.

I believe they were designed for use in Bayliners of the late 1980's and early 1990's.

As with Force motors, the L drive had a notorious reputation for problems. They haven't been made in quite a while and parts are getting scarce. I've heard that they were and are quite popular in the UK and parts are available there.

Before I purchased my SeaRay, I looked at a 89 Bayliner with an "L" drive. It looked like it was right off the showroom floor! Since I never heard of the L drive before, I called a local boat dealer to see if I should buy the boat. He said unless the guy is giving it to me for next to nothing...RUN the other way! He called it "the hell drive", and said they had many problems, including taking on water where the motor came through the hull. It sure loked nice though!!
