The wife and I attended a charity event this past Saturday night. They had some gambling, food and all local people. It was actually a Kiwanis event.

Typical carnival style wheel of chance. Well when I broke a $20 I was given all $2 bills as change. It was pretty smart because people were mainly betting $2 all night.

Yup, we lost but did not care ;) we had fun.

On the way home I stopped at a local gas station to pick up a few things.... I handed the young man behind the counter a $2 bill  He held it up to the light and it did not have a stipe in it, he checked it with the counterfiet pen and it passed  I asked what was wrong..... he told me that there WAS NO SUCH THING AS A TWO DOLLAR BILL :( So I smiled and told him he was right and I invented it. I asked if it passed the pen test and he started to look nervous ....... RUT ROH he was not sure what to do so he called over the Manager. The manager said of course the US makes 2$ bills. I got my change and that young man was asking the manager if he could substitute two singles for it ....... he wanted to keep it! :D

Came home from Vegas with a bunch of $1 coins several years ago. Had them in a pewter mug on the bar in the basement saving them for poker nights. Have no idea where they are now. Think the Mrs. gave them to the kids for school milk thinking they were quarters. Legal tender ignorance spans many generations I'm afraid!!!

GRRrrrrrrrr dollar coins! When I was on my last tour stationed in Germany the payroll offive decided to replace all dollar bills with the coin. We were the test group in Europe. What a disaster. We used to be able to buy beer downtown with a buck but not a coin!!

In 1953 I was in the Navy's Aviation Prep (AN(P)) School in Norman, OK.

Navy brass were pretty unhappy with the way sailors were treated locally and in OK City.

So, for a few months they paid us in $2 bills. . .ONLY $2 bills.

Pretty soon the local economy was awash in deuces and sailors soon became favorite sons.

I can't personally attest to any other occasions that the "Deuce" was used to bring a community's attention to the side on which their bread was buttered, but I recall many such occasions from hearsay.

Oddly, today at the shop we own we got 2 $2 bills, and 2 $1 coins. What a timely thread. :D

skargo;

i think with the economy in the crapper, folks are using the "neat" money for toys, and the "real" money for burying in the backyard (so uncle can't find it and tax it)...

or they just got tired of having it around

We have been stuck here in Canada with $1 coins (loonies) and $2 coins (toonies) for some time now. Makes for a really heavy pocket full of change !!!
Used to enjoy the paper ones so much more.

Yep, them 1 dollar coins sure messes up the folks at the fast food places.

The local post offices would give 1 dollar coins as change from the stamp vending machines. Go in with a 20 and come out listing to one side.

Kenmyfam - Love the toonies. I use one as a ball marker 'cause no one else here in Kansas has one. Ya'll do have some pretty folding money tho.

im still angry about that 5 years after a night in Canada. I really dont like coins so getting a pocket full and having to pay with coins ruined it for me.

Yeah, What ever happened to basic math skills, most of the young people at a register nowadays are lost if you give them anything other then what they were expecting, or what it says on the cash register you should be giving them. The usual reaction is, they first look at you like you have 2 heads  Then try to give the money back to you, like there's something wrong with it, confused? then they stand there stunned, as you explain it to them, and after the math lesson, you finally walk away with your change, & your head shaking :D
I really think it should be a mandatory short course in school.

But, ask them to text something, and they can do it blindfolded, behind their back, while standing on their head, without missing a trick! I can't even see the buttons, much less push them with my pudgy old fingers

A few years back I went into a store and my purchase was $10.40, i had a $20, but also 2 quarters so i gave him $20.50. He tried giving me back the .50 and said "you don't need to give me this, the 20 is enough" i said i didnt want an extra .60 in my pocket" he looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language!

Why the heck a nickel is bigger then a dime and 50 cents coin is bigger then a dollar coin?

Never understood why the nickel was so big.

Back when I owned a couple laundromats, I used to deposit $1,000 bags of quarters and dimes. Before I owned them I never realized that both bags weighed the same. They are the same ratio in value to their weight!

At one time, a dime was silver and a nickel was....well, nickel; and a dollar was considerably larger than a half-dollar.
