So many questions, Would this be worth it?

I have a 10hp Johnson but want a bigger motor. I found locally someone selling three motors for $125. They are all 50's Johnsons. A froze up 5, a froze up 18, and a 12 with a crack in the case. None have the tiller handles.(which I would need)

How much of a performance gain would I get from switching to an older 18?

How hard would it be to find a tiller handle for said 18?

If I get lucky and can part out the 5 and 12 on Ebay or the likes could I possibly recoup the initial price and cost of rebuilding the 18?

What would I want to look for to ascertain that the 18 is worth the time.

I know all of this hinges on the 18 being in rebuildable (is there such a thing as being nonrebuild shape) and the shape of the other motors/lower units but give me a WAG.

FWIW I've done and am equipped rebuilds on car motors before but this would be my first for a 2cycle.

pass on it. they have basicly the value of the aluminum scrape. the cost of parts would be more than a running motor.

But an 18 is what you want. I upgraded from a 10 to an 18hp on my small (16') pontoon boat and it was a nice upgrade and the 18 barely weighs any more. I would look around for a running 18.
