Hey everybody,

I doubt anybody here really remembers, but way back I was on here asking questions about a Johnson motor that my boss owned. Well, now 2 years later I own that outboard and the '68 Glastron V-142 Skiflite its mounted on. All in all, everything is in pretty good shape and seems to be in working order, but none of it has seen water in over 5 years. Its been out, exposed to the elements aside from a small tarp covering the motor. Everything runs and works perfectly, I just want to find ways to make it look better. Id like to see if any of you could help with ideas and finding stuff for it...

I have a car battery that would fit in it, I just have to buy the terminal adaptors. I really cant afford a marine battery, but would this one work?

The paint it in good shape but has dulled and lost its shine. Is there any chemical that could help bring it back, or will buffing do the trick?

The plexiglass windshield as a crack in it. Its almost all the way from top to bottom on the drivers side at an angle. Does anyone know where I could find a windshield that would work on it? Or is there a good way to fix this one?

The steering wheel is ugly. I hate it. Does anyone know where I could find one that looks decent in say the $25 range? I know thats a long shot. This is the type of wheel I am thinking: http://miami.ebayclassifieds.com/bo...-wheel-stainless-steel-destroyer/?ad=18823538

And fun stuff...I want to put a sound system in it. Im on a budget, so I dont have too much to spend, but I have a couple of old Pioneer 6x8 speakers that I could put in. Im really not afraid of them getting wet, but im wondering if it would even work. If I were to get a use Pioneer headunit could it be powered off the battery and connected to the speakers? Like I said, Im really not worried about the speakers, im more wondering if it would even work. I do have all of the wiring for it.

Gel coat is quite thick compared to auto paint so compounding and buffing should bring a good bit of the shine back--if it is not in too bad condition. Also: Use the search feature to look up threads with Vaseline. Some guys use it. You won't get a decent stainless destroyer wheel for 25 bucks. However, you might find a decent plastic one.

You can go to a glass shop and have them make a plexy windshield for you but that will be expensive. Best bet is to just leave it off until you can find a good used one.

Auto battery will work. They are less resistant to vibration than a marine battery but cost less.

As long as you keep the player dry, the pioneer system will work but again, it may have a shorter lifespan because of the damp air it is exposed to.

HOWEVER: First things first! Before you go making all these improvements, put your money into being certain the engine is reliable. Change the water pump impeller, the lower unit lubricant, the fuel lines and the fuel pump diaphragm (if available--some OMC pumps are available only as an assembly.)
