Ideally i think" stay with company? Bennies good, 401K, will be 7 years in May, etc. Gues it depends on what job I am offered, beleive it has to be same pay as this all workmans comp issue, have been in IT for 27 years - so many different types of IT, I'm more of the fix it, hands on, IT type (fiber optics to ship cranes, wireless, in truck PC's, hate desktop support, fix printers, media converters, VOIP phones, more layer one, don't do programming (yet) and receiving full pay and bennies until ALL will be finalized. Love working but won't put myself in dangerous situations anymore, before it was taking a toll on my family, girlfriend, free time, being on call, newer mgmt are frequently clueless, from customer service, safe cubicle back round, no field experience, have never uttered the word "safety" - I was getting really burnt out. Any comments would be great guys :) Thanks

My 2c?
You work at the port, very busy there so I know you have to be on your guard at all times. And that right there is very stress full.
(But then the commute to work can be very dangerous as well)

Take the time while your on med leave to de-stress a little

Work at a desk full time or continue to do what you like IE the 'field work', that's the question you need to ask yourself I think.

Depending on his age, it could a lot harder than it looks. "Over qualified" takes on a whole new meaning when the department manager is 10 years your junior. I had two in HR Managers come right out and tell me the hiring manager wouldn't hire me because he was intimidated by my qualifications.

I had that happen to me for YEARS and I'm only 49, I've been in land development, waste mgmt., salvage cars, pharmaceuticals, and shipping/transportation - all great experience, mgmt for last 10 years, but lately/last 18 mos. just tech. fixing stuff which is totally fine with me. I'll be curious to see the possibilities, perhaps stay with same company, no idea.

good point

"experienced" in the IT world (or any really) , also means "I want to be paid for my experience", a tough sell, when there are plenty of hungry newbie fast learners, willing to work for cheap.

" I was getting really burnt out"

Seems to be common theme, from people I know who are still in IT (I involuntarily "got out" in 04' after 15 years). As you know it's shifted completely from the "fun days" of the 80's and 90's. Tighter Corporate IT money, mergers, foreign workers and tech glut just makes things worse.

I make more money and have a more enjoyable job, as a truck driver.

If you want to stay in the career, I vote go back to work and then fish around for a better gig.

Consulting you either have to be very specialized - or fix printers and PC's.

Hey guys , no I'm just not gonna put my body in harms way anymore, my job is very hazardous, very un IT like, outdoors, big machinery, I did love the rush, I get bored easy, love outdoors - it's just not worth it anymore, my girlfriend, kids and family have never liked it , although it's a good living. Hell I just may sell life, home insurance, something safer. I've had a few buddies get killed and hurt where I am, I'm done. My supervisor and his boss have no business anywhere near the "field" and what we do, the word "safety" has never been uttered, they don't even know the very basics of personnel mgmt, salary, legalities, over time, they are software cubicle people who have been promoted because no one else was available, they know it too, but have never worked for another company or industry, who would hire them? I may transfer to another dept. dont know, just concentrating on getting my bod back in working condition and will see possibilities.

ezbtr,

Some food for thought. While you are laid up and off work maybe there is a way you can effect a real change. What about doing the homework on how many people have been hurt, what it has cost the company and compare it to the general industry and then send it "upstairs" beyond the normal chain of command. NOTHING gets an executives attention faster than $$$ signs.

Well in general we do have monthly safety status reports and as an industry I think my company does try to ensure a safe work place, BUT in the IT dept, there is NO mention of safety in meetings, emails, etc. When I was a manager, we always did in weekly meetings with my guys as we ACTUALLY KNEW all the hazards, since we worked around them every day. Before I got really hurt, I had beaten up my shoulder de installing a facility over a few weeks time, (yes it is still somewhat sore, what isn't - and I may have messed up my back as well this go around , will have that looked at as well - geez what isn't sore on my body????? LOL :) ) - he didn't even report it for 2 months even after he asked if i was going to file a claim, boy were our HR and insurance folks amazed at his lack of due diligence...so it's really more of a localized lack of basic common safety sense in IT depts.

ezbtr,

"The squeaky wheel gets the grease". :joyous:

Oddly enough I had to give a statement 2 days ago to workmans comp insurance company, I DID state that fact, and hell when I hurt my shoulder 4 - 5 mos ago, took my oh so bright boss 2-3 mos to process it after he asked me if I would file a claim????
As Mork from Ork would say."shiznit"!!!!!!
