OK i was at work cleaning up some property after class, unfortunately i went straight from campus and forgot to put real shoes in the car, so im doing this in flip flops. Well i found some fire ants, and the guy who owned the property saw me slapping at my feet, figured out what happened and told me to run into the house and put mustard on the bites/stings. I was expecting to get out of the house and have him laugh at me for believing him and now having mustard on my feet, but it worked? i have no clue why it did and feel free to disagree but it seemed to help a lot, so i thought i would share this little tidbit.

Mustard is a very common household remedy for burns, now ant bites, that's news to me. Glad you shared the info, good to know for the future . .

That is a new one to me. I have also used vanilla extract to keep flys and gnats off of my face. I thought the old timer who told me about it was trying to get a good laugh.

Absorbine Jr. will repel gnats and flies too. Learned from Little league baseball coach.

Ever heard of a "mustard plaster" or "mustard poultice"?

A dab of ammonia on a swab or cotton ball works pretty well for ants and skeeter bites.

I think they should add an anaesthetic to insect repellent. I'm usually already bit by the time I remember to spray some on. That would fix me right up.

never heard of using mustard either.

WD 40 works, kills the itch in seconds if you get it quick. the longer it takes to spray after the bite, the less effective as the poison gets a head start.

tooth paste works good for mosquito bites too.

Now you've gone and made yourself more tasty!:D

I've heard that jewelweed is good for poison ivy. Never heard about the mustard thing.

Vinegar also works on bug bites. It will also take the sting out of a bad sunburn.

When I'm bass fishing, I consume enough nutritional (brewer's) yeast, usually in an eggnog so I pee yellow. My whole body has a unique odor that is repulsive to the biting bites, but doesn't seem to bother fishing partners or fish. Lasts all day.

The milk from milkweed works pretty good on stinging nettles, especially if rubbed in with the milkweed leaves..

Heard the other day Preperation H works on sunburns. They said it Soooths and Coools. Makes sense haven't tried it yet though. No sun here lately.
