Any suggestions for interesting shallow water snorkeling sites in Southwest Florida between Sarasota and Marco Island not too far from shore, for those occasions when we don't want to drive the Keys?

fort desot park, at the south end of pinellas county. egmont key, just off te parks shores... but usually, the further south you go in florida , the better. ive lived in pinellas for 30 years and have always gon south... north is only good if you want to snorkl in the fresh water springs, which are a whole nother ball game.... but i go there more than anything. the springs are awesome

m ikey

Mikey,

Thanks for the note. As far as going south, could you be a little more specific? Like have you tried the Cayo Costa Island area or the Sanibel Island waters?

I have buddies who have snorkeled in Boca Grande Pass around the old phosphate docks. Be careful of the current can be brutal. Huge Jew fish would not catch me in there with all the sharks. I have snorkeled in Naples around the the rocks off of Clam Pass lots of Snook even seen a manatee once.
