Snorkeling at Ft DeSoto

I plan on taking the kids snorkeling next weekend at Ft DeSoto to check out the ruins. Has anyone done this? I know it's a tourist area (what isn't around here), but I'm wondering if it's stupid busy during the weekend. I may do it during the week if it is. Anything in particular I should know before going there?
