I have been trying to trouble shoot my bogging and running rough 97 5.7 Mercruiser. Checked gas intake tube, clear, screen clear, replaced anti-siphon valve, gas line to water/fuel seperator no deterioration in tube, replaced f/water seperator and no water and only a spec of an element, changed the carb fuel filter although I stripped the dang carb threading but ended up being able to get the fitting in very snug so good there. replaced my dist cap and rotor. Sprayed carb cleaner in the carb although I understand that does not always clean the carb out. Disconnected my fuel line to the carb and turn it over and I had plenty of gas pouring into a container which would seem to dismiss a fuel pump issue. Also replaced the plugs.
The egine still runs rough and the RPMs are jumping all over the place and when it idles it idles prettty rough. Again just jumping all over.
I think that leaves the following most likely issues:
Carborator
Ignition sensor or module
Coil ?? (My current one looks nasty but could be all that dielectric grease.)
I'm worried about throwing money into the parts to do a process of elimination.
When I was running the engine without the carb flame reducer the carb sounds like it has rice crispies snapping, crackling and popping inside. Wondering of that is normal.
Any advice at this point would be very helpful. New to owning my on boat and am learning much more about my engine than I ever thought but hoping to get this thing running before the season is over.
