Just heard on the news as I was walking out the door that a snakehead was found dead in a small lake in Memphis, 'bout 30 miles North of here. Hopefully some choad threw it in there as a sick joke and it didn't get there on it's own. Bowfin and gar are bad enough here, the last thing we need is another toothy varmit crawling around.

I guess Friday the 13 is unlucky for the fish too.

spots

We've had 'em for a few years around here.

Fry them the same way you would a catfish. They are great with a little lemon and butter.

:)

Just kidding, of course.

People need to be more responsible. Hopefully it's not a big problem and gets controlled quickly.

Hopefully they "control" it a little better than they did here.

Nothing that was effective. Drained a few ponds. Did a "dragnet" through all the local waters. And the thing still escaped and spread.

if we could just mobilize the nation's fleet of bass boats, we could neutralize this menace. Let's fish it out of existence! C'mon men, it's the least you could do for your country!

Who's with me?

From what i've read so far about this fish, it is none too good, this fish has the ability to decimiate the fishing of our rivers, lakes and streams :(

okay! Bounty fishing, let's go. I hear they're aggressive, but really messy in the livewell, and don't die easily.

Heard a radio interview a few years ago with a Potomac River bass fisherman who caught one & put it in a dry livewell...it was still alive four or five hours later when he turned it over to the DNR. In Asia they migrate from pond to pond overland in the rainy season, stopping to catch their breath in mudpuddles. Several spawns a year, and they eat anything that swims - can completely destroy a fishery.

If they're in Memphis...well, that's too close for comfort.

Where do these things come from and are they in Texas?

I looked up these things once and there are many species of snakehead but only one or two that could actually moves on land for short distance. I wouldn't worry too much about them walking from pond to pond. They probably spreaded by water.

According to the Sci-Fi Channel, they grow to 6 feet long, swim at 40 knots, can jump 8 feet in the air, commonly attack boats full of drunken teenagers and are voracious man-eaters. :p

spots

Never heard of them 'til now. Hopefully they're 'controlled' stat! That's amazing they can cross land. They look like a sea cucumber with a fin.

Here's that interview I mentioned, from August 3, 2004 - it's about 8 minutes - fascinating. Listen to it if you have time.

http://www.npr.org/dmg/dmg.php?prgC...2004&segNum=13&mediaPref=WM&getUnderwriting=1
