I have a 1997 Yamaha Exciter that smokes badly while idling. When speed is increased smoke stops. Does anyone know the specific reason why this is and is there a retrofit part to fix the problem? I have been told this is inherint with this year, for some reason they designed the oil injection pump without variable flow capability so it sends the same amount of oil to the engines regardless of rpm, making it smoke at lower rpms because of excess oil. There are no problems with operation or performance otherwise. The boat has two 110 hp marine jet motors.

Re: smoking while idle in Yamaha Exciter

Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your boat? We just bought a 1997 Exciter and it smokes real bad when we are idling. When we pick up speed the smoke stops. We have taken it in twice and they can't seem to fix the problem. It smokes way more then it should. If anyone can think of what it is, please help.

Thanks!!

i don't know them yamaha 2 strokes. but think it's real normal for them to smoke. real bad even, and be nothing wrong with them. think of it this way. at least ya know it's gettin oil......it's the non variable rate oil injection i think that causes it to smoke.......had a kaw. 750 that'd choke ya to death if the wind was with ya and ya went slow.....there wasn't anything wrong with it. it just smoked alot.....

ya know ya can start yer own thread w/o reserrecting one from 02.....

Besides being a 2002 post you resurected, it should have been posted in the Yamaha outboard forum anyway. All it is is an outboard powerhead on jet pump, it's not an IO.
