I have a '73 70hp chrysler model number 707hf and i took her out the other day and the starter worked and worked pretty strong until the last time i tried to start it and got nothing, popped the hood and noticed the starter was smoking. im not sure what made that it go bad with no warning. its probably the 30th time i started it up this year. If anyone knows what would make the starter from working so good with no warnings to burnt up smoking within and hour i'd love to know. On the other hand the starter is a Prestolit mkq4001. I cant seem to find this starter anywhere online so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what brand/model # of another starter i could use as a replacement that would fit this priticular make and model outboard. I know they sell starters here on iboats but I've seen them for 50$ on ebay, any help is greatly appriciated, thanks!

Re: smoking starter/replacement starter

ANY starter from any 3 or 4 cylinder Chrysler or Force before 1994 will fit. Prestolite and Bosch were the two types used.

Your starter had wound fields while the newer models have permanent magnet fields. One less winding to melt or short. Either the fields or the armature shorted, or the brushed wore out and your starter went out in a blaze of glory.

You can disassemble it and see what the damage is. If the commutator is carboned heavily but the winding(s) insulation is good, cleaning the commutator and replacing brushes may restore it.
