smoking johnson 50 hp

my 50 hp. johnson (2005) was running fine until it started to cough and spit,but did not stall out.It has since been smoking quite a bit.. The oil compartment has sufficient oil in it..What can the cause be????

Air intrusion somewhere in the fuel/oil lines.
