I had my boat out and was a little hard starting , had a new starter put in this spring. I got it on plane and noticed some smoke coming from the back left side of the motorin the back. The motor is a 1983 Mercruiser 898, 305 chevy. I idled it back down and it seemed to get alittle better, any help on what this could be, what should I look for when tryin to diagnose thanks.

You might also check the wiring to see if thiers any dry rot.
My first time out with the old/new boat, smoked so bad I broke out the fire exst, but the smoke was coming from the rear and the problem was an old dry rotted wire on the compass up front by the gauges.

Could it have been some oil or other substance that was stuck to the block following the starter replacement? Even WD-40 will burn off at some point.

Did you check your guages when you saw the smoke? Was the temp within range? Oil pressure?
