My merc 650 1975 as of now i'm using 25:1 oil mix because the motor had setup for so long, is rather smokey when i run it, mind you i have not put her in the water just running it at idle to keep the carb job i done from going sour. It seems to idle ok but just smokes more than i'd like. Could this be just because i'm running it rich on oil right now?

Re: smokey

Normal mix for this is 50:1. Are you running this engine in? If not why are you mixing at 25:1?

Twice as much oil = twice as much if not more smoke.....

Re: smokey

Hello Greg, the reason I'm running it rich is because it set up at my father in laws house for 15 years and I'm just trying to make sure every thing gets lubed well before I go back to 50:1. I figure 2 or 3 gallons of 25:1 should do the trick. I'm sure that after 15 yrs the rings and bearings have dried out so yeah maybe I'm breaking it in again.

Re: smokey

As KCLOST says, the excess smoke will be due to the high oil/fuel mix. I'm not sure how much work this engine has done but as long as it is run in, brief extra oiling would only be help to get it running and would serve no benefit now - it will oil up your plugs and leave unwanted deposits.

Have you replaced the water pump impellor, checked the lower unit and checked engine compression? All things that should be done before heading out on the water.

Re: smokey

yup, new water pump, new gear oil, old gear oil was blueish with no water or metal shavings, rebuilt fuel system from new gas tank, all fuel lines, fuel pump overhaul and carb overhaul. Compression and timing good. Just wanted to run a couple gallons of oil rich fuel to make sure all was lubed good.

Re: smokey

It sure couldn't hurt. Ask your father-in-law if he ever did one. If not, I sure would.

Re: smokey

He's not much on maintanance. It's a wonder the compression and the lower unit was good. His Idea of cleaning a shotgun after it has set for 10 years is to shoot it. Also when I first asked him about the motor His reply was "I'll go and crank it up right now". Man that really made me nervous, even I knew you don't just go and try to start an outboard motor without atleast making sure the fuel lines aren't rotten, which they were. I practically had to beg him not to touch it, just sell/give it to me and let me deal with it.
