Please help I have a 1997 Mariner Magnum 40 hp 2 cycle 4 cylinder oil injection. I run premium gas tcw-3 Quick silver oil. The gas in western Michigan has 10% alcohol in it I also use NGK-buhw-2 plugs. The problem is it smokes alot I turn it of and bobber fish a while and restart and a BIG cloud of blue oily smoke comes out and oil film on the water. I brought it in to a dealer put new neddle and seats in both carbs they say it runs good. It has plenty of power and runs good

Re: Smokey Mariner

Make sure that your oil pump is set correctly. You will see a linkage that runs from your carbs to the oil pump and on that pump are a series of lines. The line on the carb linkage that is furthest away from the other two lines should line up wiyh the line one the oil pump when things are at idle. Also if this got worse after your carb work these things can get set up backwards.

Re: Smokey Mariner

fish42.....2 possible problems....1, back in this vintage there wee a group of oil pumps installed that had the wrong end plate on them, and pumped waayy to much oil....a service bulletin covered it....the other possibility [and more likely] is a oil pump output check valve that is stuck open or weak...follow the oil line out of the pump, this check valve is located were the oil and gasoline meet....

Re: Smokey Mariner

I have a 1996 150 Mariner (2.0) with the same problem. I think I may have caused it myself by putting a new fuel line on in reverse (real smart huh!). I primed the bulb several times which ended up sucking TCW3 through the pump and 2psi check valve. Then realized my stupid move and switched the hose around. To make matters worse, one of my equally absent minded fishing partners had knocked the arm off of the oil pump which meant that the outboard was being run with the oil pump maxed out for the next couple of fishing trips.

Since then, my engine has failed to cold start on several trips. The plugs are always fouled with wet oil when I have trouble cold starting. I can get it running by cleaning the plugs or using ether (I know, bad move) but find that it is pushing plenty of smoke and plenty of unburned oil is hitting the water.

Do any of you think that I've damaged the oil pump or the 2psi valve or both??? Or is the "wrong oil pump end plate" problem that ODDD1 mentioned a contributing factor?

Please help!!??
