Hello All. I have a 1996 Joshnson 88 SPL that is running great. My question is the oil to gas mix. I am mixing it at 50 to 1, however this leaves a terrible smoke trail on the lake. Do I really need this much oil, or can I cut it back. Only smokes bad in no wake zones, or at the dock. Thanks alot. Dave

Check the temps of both heads with a laser gun when warmed up. 140-155 is normal. If either of the thermostat is stuck open, it can cause the powerhead to run cool, causing poor combustion and smoking.

It will smoke more at lower motor speeds as it does not need as much oil at lower RPM. You are premixing at 50 to 1 so that is what it gets at all speeds. Noticed the same tendency with my motor when I went from the VRO pump to premixing. Great advice above for the head temperatures though. Could be a good time for a decarb.
