Hey guys I am also looking at a pair of boats to use on smaller waters when fishing alone or with one other person.

Smoker Craft Pro Mag 140 (08' model)

* 15 or 20hp Merc or Yamaha 2 or 4 stroke
* Minn Kota Power Drive trolling motor
* Cover
* Smoker Craft trailer
* basic Lowrance depth finder (bottom level model)

Hoping this package in our market should be in the 5400 range, what do you think? Anyone have any input on this boat? I know of a dealer that has one as a leftover in the 5500 range, but needs to be upgraded from a 9.9hp. Boats are not selling right now so I figure I should be able to get this combo with a 15 or 20 two stroke for the same price... (5400-5500)

Any input on a LUND WC 16DLX, not a fan of the lack of a casting deck and no trolling motor mount on the front...

If you don't "need" new, then you can find some real bargains on 2-5 year old boats with very little use.
Its a buyers market.

If you go with the 16'er, get atleast a 25hp.

Happy boat shopping.

Either of those boats would probably be a great option for smaller water fishing. Roscoe is right about the 25hp motor. I have a WC16 with a 15hp Suzuki and it goes good but the extra 10hp would truly be an upgrade. I've also spent some $ modifying my WC16 to my fishing needs. I built a front deck from the front bench forward for storage and my battery and also wired the boat for a bilge pump and my trolling motor.

Price wise, the $5500 range doesn't sound totally terrible either. I bought my 2000 WC16, 1997 Suzuki 15hp, and 2006 trailer for $3500. I know the WC14 goes for about $2200 at my local dealer and a 25hp Yamaha 2 stroke goes for about $2600. Throw in a trailer and a few extras thats about $5500; however, every price is negotiable...especially in this economy.

I think you're off to a good start. You're looking at 2 solid boats from 2 very good companies. Keep researching and if you can talk to people who own one or the other to get their take on it. There's always things you want to change once you start fishing out of a boat.

I do like both boats, the lund obviously has a little additional room in both length and also beam... I am not fishing big waters, so it would primarily a small lake and river boat.. The Smokercraft gives up a little in size, but also has more storage - front casting deck - and a bow mounted trolling motor. The lund is nice but would have to build a casting deck off what is already in place and also run wire and build some sort of mount on the bow to get a trolling motor up front. Once done it would be great but an awful lot of work for something in the range of 6000 + range new... I agree I believe the Smokercraft 140 with a 25hp 2 stroke should be about 5500 new, especially in this market...

Both are good boats, the Lund is a Lund of coarse and Smoker is also a very good boat.

Smokers are actually built about 10 miles from my house and I know the owner(retired) Doug Shrock.

you really can't lose with either, pick the one that you think will best fit your needs, sounds like the Smoker has the lead there.

Good luck.

Actually made a few calls today and got some odd numbers. I am thinking of just holding on to my outboard and getting the boat, trailer, trolling motor package. Figure this will bring the cost of the boat down drastically.

Now looking into the G3 V143T - awesome boat, but curious to see how this price comes in against the Smokercraft. The G3 is alot more boat, but have a feeling the pricing on this boat may be very comparable and competitive.

I just concluded the same quest in December so here's my 2 cents.
IMHO, The Smoker appears to have the a slight edge build/ feature wise aLthough I preffer the extra comfort and seaworthyness of a 16' boat. ( Boats "shrink" once you own them for a while :) I'd also vote that with that amount of weight and beam, your going to need at least a 20hp and 25 would be better for either. ( My buddy ran a 10 honda on a 14' lund of similar design and it was a sled. Wouldn't come close to planeing with 2 men and gear.) I can tell you that the 16DLX SHOULD run $3600 ( bare bones). Add $900 for a trailer and $2100 (min) for a new two stroke 20/25 and youv'e blown your (optomistic ) $5500 goal before you even rig it.

That said, there ARE some great deals out there on leftovers and in the used market. My advice is to shop deals and features (new and used) on boats in this range and then go with the best deal for you/ bang for the buck. Heck, it's a basic aluminum boat, not a space shuttle. These things are pretty simple and robust by nature. A few WTB adds placed in Craigs lsit got me lots of 2-3 yr old boats offered in your price range. $5500 will buy you allot more boat in the (slightly) used market if that's all you have to spend. ( It's also a smarter move if your new to boating.)

FWIW, I looked at allot of new boat lines and found leftovers in most brands with some help from the internet. Some of the best prices ( on boats I considered) found were (approximatly) as follows: Lund 16 dlx ($3600), Sylvan 15 alaskan ($2400), Alumacraft 160T ($7100), Starcraft Camp16 ($4200?), Mirrocraft 1605-O ($3000) . In motors it was: Yamaha 20hp 4stk -($2700), Tohatsu 25 4stk ($3200),Yamaha 20 2stk ($2200) Yamaha 25 2stk($2500). Most packages in this size range ran $7500-$13500, Not saying you can't do better but these were on the low end of some laughable quotes! BTW. It was my experience that it was easier to wrangle a lowball deal on the boat (or boat package) vs an outboard. (Boats take up allot of spece, outboards don't ;-)

p.s. I bought the 1615-0 in the end. It was layed out perfectly (for me), had better strength and ride, and was at the bottom of the price pile.

Re: Smokercraft Pro Mag 140 or Lund WC 16DLX

I own a 1988 Smoker Craft 14 MGO and it is 99% identical to the new promag 140. I have a 25 hp merc on mine. I mainly fish smaller lakes also. And i love mine. Everyone that has fished in it with me, I have to literally tell them its a 14 foot not 16. It has a roomy feel to it. However, I have to admit I only have a handful of boats to compare it to, so take it for whats its worth. Also I think I should add that I believe any model of anything that a company doesn't change over so many years has to have something going for it.
