smoke no water?

hi thanks for looking hope you can help!

i gotta mercury 9.8 2t outboard its got a new water pump i fitted it, its pumping water its spraying out the exhaust, the prob is theres no smoke coming out of there(exhause) theres a little rubber tube like a fule pipe on the side where its coming out! seen other outboards running and they have water shootin out of there none coming out thou just smoke?
i am thinking maybe the gaskit needs changing or repairing?
anyone no about this,

also just thourt my outboard has got a electric plug onit. can i charge a battery directly from that or is it just for powering lights and stuff?

Without a serial we cant tell so later, 7.5 had a thermostat and acted weird then first started some had the stats remove and then they would do that ck the port side the stat should be on the exhaust plate, ck on the 2 yellow wire that come from under the flywheel if they go to a rectifier block 2 yellow and 1 red wire it will charge a batt if not it's only a lighting coil
