I have a 2000, 30 hp 4cycle Suzuki short shaft outboard which I have used for 1 season. It has worked fine except that about 6-7 times it has emitted blue smoke at start up. Smoke would disappear once the throttle was opened. Smoke would reappear if motor was shutoff for 20 mins or so and restarted. At times the smoke was quite significant. Dealer investigated the problem and could not find anything wrong although they weren't able to get the outboard to produce any smoke. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experienced a similar problem or who can shed some light on what could be causing the problem.

Well..its not supposed to do that. Blue smoke is oil and black is fuel..are you checking your oil level I hope? Sounds like valve guide or seal went bad....Check your plugs to see which cylinder is pumping the oil, the plug will be wet with oil or all black and carboned up...
