Smoke from Prop of 1976 Johnson 15hp during out-of-water test need for concern?

I just got my 1976 Johnson 15hp outboard running again, and during an out-of-water test (with proper "hose kit" installed), observed smoke from the prop area. I did a few stop-start tests, neither for a long period. When I saw the smoke I immediately quit. Do I have cause for alarm, or is this to be expected...should I go ahead and put it in the water? smoke is meant to come out of the prop that's the exhaust or do you mean from around the prop. On a 2 stoke most smoke is good no smoke from anywhere is bad
