Hi,
I have a Yamaha 70B, and the smell from the burnt fuel/oil literally makes me and the missus feel quite nauseous, and is starting to spoil our time out.
I have tried normal and fully synthetic 2-stroke oil, and they both are off-putting, with the synthetic being the worse.
How can I either get rid of the smell, or mask it in some way ?
Is it because the oil isn't being burnt fully ?
Thanks,
Paul
ps. Please don't tell me to get a 4 stroke, unless you are going to donate one to me !!!

If your outboard is running correctly and not misfiring or running excessively rich, then it is either upgrade to a late model 2 stroke fuel injected outboard which will cut down on a lot of that smoke or 4 stroke fuel injected outboard or switch to an inboard & I/O powered boat.

Some premium outboard two cycle oils for carburated outboards do cut down on some of the smoke but not enough for what you are expecting.

It's pay to play, no denying the facts. One's expectations dictate the budget required on what things actually cost. There's no getting a luxury car on a Honda Civic budget.

Boating isn't cheap unless it is using oars or pedal powered.

Assuming your engine is in tip top shape and in tune, I find semi-synthetic to perform best for me.
Don’t be impatient… it will take several tanks of fuel to clean out residual oil from the motor

Alway “drive” into the wind

oil smokes when burnt

OP is driving too slow.
smoke should be way behind you

is this an oil injected motor or premix?

maybe the motor is running too rich on oil.
need to make sure it is getting the proper ratio of oil to gas

there are scented 2 stroke oils available in many flavors. I think I would like the coffee..might be worth a try..

Lol, I was going to say something similar or " Yeah, how I love the smell of 2 stroke oil in the morning!! "

Very common complaint with women but with men?? Not so much.

I guess it's a new world!

I have three candles on my wish list. "Race Gas", "2-stroke" and "burnout"

It's oil injected, and doesn't appear to be adjustable according to the manual. However, when I did the checks a while back, it was giving slightly more oil than the spec, but didn't seem to smell like it does now.
It only smokes when I first start it up, but by the time it's hot, the smoke has all but dissapeared (but not the smell). Unfortunately, I have a 20 min drive down the river (5mph limit) before I get to the sea.

Even a 4 stroke with wind at your back has fuel smells so not sure you can get around it.

Expect smoke at startup but if your seeing lots of it after it warms up then maybe something is wrong.

Tough one because nobody knows how sensitive your nose is.

Water temps have a huge affect on the amount of smoke.

My motor smokes all day once water temps drop into the 40’s F. Simply not enough heat at low rpm (900-1000) to keep motor at operating temp. Watch pressure gauge play ping pong all day as the stats open and close trying to regulate temperature

Pretty common to see a buildup of oil residue (white goo) on the exhaust ports at the same time

"Very common complaint with women but with men?? Not so much." Sometimes I go slow downwind to get the full effect......

What style boat?
" SOME " half cabin/ cuddy cabins can be the real villians of the piece.
Specially those that don't have flow through ventilation...windows, vents etc etc.
( like my sons OZ designed cuddy cabin )

If yours is one of those just try opening the front anchor hatch a tad.

Few things come to mind
Although, initially I presumed this engine was an early pre mix era engine and would be 100-1 mix…you say this is actually an oil injection model.
This being the case…I’d say it’s normal for her to smoke a little when at low rpm or if the plugs are needing changed…I’d also make sure that your getting the correct variable injection mix from her. She may be giving full on max mix as a result of her needing set up or adjusted.
Next thing…I strongly urge you not to use synthetic injector low ash oil (if I’m right in assuming the description of fully synthetic means it’s not tcw3 spec). She won’t last too long if it’s not on tcw3.
She’s maybe just needing a good run perhaps.
Lastly…who doesn’t like the manly smell of 2 stroke, haha. But yeah…have a look into the mix she’s getting for sure.
