Smart Tabs?

I have an '07 Rinker 192 with 5.0MPI and Alpha 1 drive and extended swim deck. Am trying to correct the issue with time to get on plane with a load (skiing, tubing and/or carrying heavy load).

I/ve tried 14.5X19" 3-blade; 14X18" 4-blade and a 15X17" 3-blade. All work well for a set spectrum of use. I understand that the Smart Tabs can be installed on the 192, but where? (Pix if you have 'em please). I'd like to not have to change props all the time and to get better handling.

Any advice is appreciated.

read post on list to the left. Do not carry more then 600 lbs passenger and gear. That will help.

Which model of tabs did you get, the stainless ones or the plastic ones? I've got a few tips for you once I know which ones.

I got the 80lb. plastic tabs. Looks like a straight forward install. Measure twice drill once.

Tim,

I'm thinking the 80 lb. units will give you too much tab pressure. I found the 60's were perfect.

There's a lot of talk in the installation manual about the angle of the tabs in the down position relative to the bottom of the hull. I believe it's somewhere around 25 degrees. If you install the tab plate onto the lower mounting bracket without the actuator and let it free hang, you will see that the tab will be at the perfect angle when placed on the transom (assuming your transom is at 90 degress to the hull bottom). I slid the mounting bracket up about 1/4 of an inch to clear the radius at the hull/transom corner.

Use masking tape over the places you want to drill. Only drill as deep as you need to go with the proper drill size. Use 3M 4000 (not 5000) marine sealant in the holes and under the screw head for a perfect seal.

Thanks for the info. I did see from several forum posts that Rinker 192 owners found the #60 tabs to work best. I called Nauticus and spoke w rep who said I should go w the #80. I have a heavy 5.0MPI weighing me down in back. It is probably what causes me the planing and porpoising issues I've had since new. Easy enough to change out the actuator if I need to go down to #60.

I have to modify my trailer before I can get the tabs on. I realized today that the runners extend out past the transom area where I need to put the tabs.

PS Planing and porpoising issues seem to be hull related (I had them too with the 4.3L).

I posted this under the Rinker owners topic, but this topic probably more suitable... sorry for the duplicates

I have a 2009 Rinker 192 BR that I recently installed the smart tabs on as well. When i talked to the reseller, they suggested i go with the ST1290-80 model. I have teh 4.3L Mercruiser which i believe they rate at 220HP. I also have a SS 19pitch high five prop installed as well i ordered the boat with the Extended swim platform. I also have a samson tower installed (which is rather heavy) Last year i was having trouble with getting the boat to plane, this year, no problem with that, but the trim tabs will almost toss the boat from port to starboard and vice versa depending upon load etc. I originally installed them at the 25 degrees as per the manual, but have since moved them way back, to close to 10 -12 degrees. I can still feel them push the boat but not the way they did before. My question is, are these too much tab for this boat? Should i replace them with the SX model? I have attached a couple photos.

I installed the SX 80lb tabs on my 192 last weekend. After having it on the water 2 times I am very pleased with the improvements. Porpoising is gone on flat to moderate chop and what little there is, in rough water, is controlable with trim or throttle. Gets up on plane in seconds w/o pointing bow into the sky. Rides much flatter on the water too. GPS has me at 17MPH at slowest planning speed. That's down about 3MPH. Do not know about the top speed yet. I need to put the 19" pitch 3-blade back on. Currently have the 4 blade 18" on.

As to the question of whether to use 60 or 80 lb actuators; the 80's seem to work well on my boat. I probably will not need to use the 5th setting as it seems to behave well on setting 3 with four adults. I plan on taking the wife and kids tubing and wake boarding this weekend so I'll see how it works on that setting.

I have not noticed the tipping problem that SAMTOBY references. That could be a function of the higher center of gravity from the tower. I am not sure if changing to SX tabs would correct that. Also not sure if that happens just while towing a skier or at all times.

All in all I wish I put these tabs on last year. It is a different boat now. Wife can even drive it. Maybe I can ski now.

Had the boat out for the last time this year. 9 people on board 1550lbs .
2 or 3 on the tube @ any given time . I was quite impressed with the lil v6 .
The SmartTabs definatly helped out . Boat blew out in very tight turns when I was tossing the monsters off the tube . But boat was very loaded with bodies & the boat was not very well balanced as everyone was a heavyweight . I was also not trimmed down all the way before the turn so I may have just been the Capt. fault .I never had such a load on board before.
Normaly I only have half that load at best .

What prop are you running? You will find that it's probably not the captain's fault. After installing SX tabs, I found I could not keep the prop hooked up in tight turns when towing a tube. The answer was to go to a cupped stainless steel prop. Blowouts are a thing of the past!

A 19p Hi5 is what I have , I never had that happen before (Blowout)so it kinda took me by suprise .But to be fair I never had that much weight in my boat before. Still want to see my prop guy about repitching it to 20p.If its crazy $$,I will just buy a 20p 4 blade something over winter.Winterized the engine already so no chance I will have to get the 383mpi replacement engine next spring.
