Re: Smart tabs...

Try here:

Chaparral Smart Tabs

I'll be posting results soon. Need another run with a lighter setting. Definitely helped hole shot, stability, porpoising and low speed wander. Plows a little too much as is, but I think we'll get that with the adjustment.

Re: Smart tabs...

I just put a set on my 18' Center Console. Smoothed her out a lot, made turning much more stable, and definitely made hole-shot much better. Lost some top end though, I'm hoping the adjusting of tension corrects that!!!

Re: Smart tabs...

I have never read a post here or anywhere else where someone installed Smart Tabs correctly and ever took them off or even said that there was no gain. Awesome product. The boat in the avitar at the left has them installed, does it look like it is suffering???????????? :D

John, you can send my check to:_______________________

Re: Smart tabs...

LubeDude - Sorry to break your streak, but my Smart Tabs are coming off soon....

Yes, they really help in terms of planing speed, bow-rise and holeshot. And, yes, they really smoothen out the ride.

However, there's no possibility of sideways adjustment. I'm tired of riding lopsided, whether that be due to uneven loads, winds or currents or waves from the side, propeller torque, or whatever.

And, no, the trick of setting the two tabs at unequal settings didn't really work for me as it introduced some other handling issues (i.e. unexpected sharp turns at some intermediate speeds where one tab would come down and the other remain up, and vice versa).

So, mine are coming off and will be replaced by some ordinary tabs and an automatic trim system by Mente Marine (link) .

This will be equally simple to operate, sure to work in all load & ride situations, but a lot more expensive than the Smart Tabs.

I've concluded (exactly as Nauticus also says) that the Smart Tabs are great for some applications but not for all. Bigger boats or lopsided rides do need helm-adjustable tabs.

When I think about it, it would actually be ideal to have a combination of both types of tabs; i.e. tabs that were helm-adjustable but still flexed some by themselves. Hey, I should patent that! ;)

Re: Smart tabs...

Stevens;

Sorry to here that our Smart Tabs did not fix your lateral stability issues. Some narrow boats with a deep V hull are more prone to listing with minor weight shifts. I experienced this myself when in Sweden (your good neighbors) a few years ago. I was told that the boat design was fairly common in this small (20 ft) mini cabin. The port to starboard listing was severe without the Smart Tabs and less severe with them. It was annoying at best. From a fuel efficiency view point the design is good and that certainly is a consideration when Gas is $5.00 to $6.00 per gallon.

As for correcting a list by adjusting the tabs with more or less pressure on one side, in your case since the list was not permanently to one side, this should not be done.

What would help is to trim the motor up, raising the bow when cruising. This allows the boat to run a bit more on the rear of the hull where the V is not so pronounced.

In any event, you are in need of more lateral correction than we can provide and manually or helm controlled tabs would be better. Be careful with the auto correction systems as I hear they have a tendency to over react. This may be even more pronounced on smaller (under 7 meters) narrow boats.

Thanks for your support in the past.

By the way our ST1610 series would work better since the plate are much larger (16" x 10").

Re: Smart tabs...

John, I love the Smart Tabs! I have lost a couple of MPH on top-end. I haven't begun the adjustment/ testing phase. Any tips to make the process go more smoothly. I will definitely not be removing the Smart Tabs.

Not a problem, there has to be boats out there that they wont work 100% on. I think that trim adjustment may help as John has stated but maybe not. Kinda sounds like there may be some bow steer going on. Anyway, ya gave it a try.

Re: Smart tabs...

Studlymandingo;

The loss of speed tells me that you are getting too much lift at the stern when at cruising speeds and above. Assuming that you do not have any additional lifting devices on the boat such as a hydrofoil, the answer to regaining the speed and a bit more is to reduce the lift pressue. The adjsutment is simple and effective. Move the actuator closer to the plate (at the plate bracket only). This changes the leverage point, but does not change the agle of deployment. Changing the angle will have little or no effect on the top speed.

Re: Smart tabs...

Thanks John. Just moved it, but unfortunately I won't be able to test it until tomorrow evening. I really enjoyed the tabs this past weekend, made wakeboarding much more fun.
