Just received my new trim tabs. I'll start out with my one complaint. May be a minor one but it bothers my sense of balance.

THE BRACKETS THAT MOUNT ON THE TRIM TABS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE IN A LEFT AND RIGHT VERSION. Even though the tabs are a good value for what I hope they will do, it wouldn't have cost but pennies, in the long run to make a left and right bracket. The transom bracket is already a universal unit but you cannot use it that way because you have to keep it in line with the lower tab bracket. Also, as the cylinder ends screw in so you cannot rotate one ball joint end 180 degrees without loosening it.

Lacking a left and right lower bracket, you have to mount both cylinders on the left side of the brackets and at minimum it does not look good. There probably is no other signifigant effect.

Other than that, the Smart Tabs are nicely made and installed easily. I can hardly wait to try them.

One hint for those about to install. If you would like to keep from lifting your gelcoat and outer surface of glass, use a counter sink bit to slighly widen the opening of your mounting holes. Now when the screw is threaded into the hole, it is not biting the outer surface. It you want to remove the tabs later, for any reason, you will have a much flatter surface to fill the holes.

Prior to installing the Smart Tabs, I removed the brackets for the old stationary tabs that I had tried unsucessfully, years ago. All of the holes were pooched out, like little volcanos, and it made it impossible to patch the holes neatly.

That'll be Report B, rnsi. No, I'm still putting my boat back together from a summer long floor and motor project. It'll be a couple of weeks b4 I can put em to the test. I'm expecting the best, though. Understanding how they are supposed to work, then having them in my hands, really boosts my confidence that they will be good. The fat lady hasn't sung yet, however.

Do you have numbers from how it used to run? Time to plane, minimum planing speed, top end?

Hi, Boomyal I totaly agree with you those brackets should have been maid with a left and right hand side, they dont look rite whene installed. I took it up with John but he claims it would cause room for error in shipping, but the tabs do work verry well.I have theme on a 17.5 fishing boat,i am sur you will like yours to. Have a great evening. J,C,

No, I have not recorded those. However...once I launch for the maiden voyage, I will have the cylinders disconnected from the transom brackets, with the tabs then pulled up out of contact with the water.

As I will have a revised motor :D :D :D (331 cid stroker w/ 4 bbl Holley, original 302 w/ 2bbl) any previous data would be irrelevant. I did however have a porpoising problem before, that I would think would not be altered with a new motor.

Once I record the non-tab stats, I'll lower them into play and record the differences. I will post all.

Been postin a few as I went, but here is the latest condition. Will hopefully lay the prepped floor panels, foam and cover with glass this coming week. The motor is not far behind. I have to paint it, along with the accessories and it'll will be ready to reinstall.

From these:

Nice job. Don't forget to install a conduit for wiring. And add a pull string. You'll be glad you did. I wish I had the time to redo mine. Nothing like standing back and admiring your own work.

Nice too, when someone else appreciates it, rnsi.
I hadn't really thought of the conduit, however, I only cut out the floor to just in front of the front seat. It would be hard to get the conduit through the last 3' of original foam and floor. All of the current wiring goes up to the front up inside the gunwale. That will have to suffice.

Re: Smart Tabs-Preliminary Report-Installation.

Boomyal;

As rnsi stated we have been asked before why we did not make a left and right plate bracket, and he was correct as to our reply. 1) is that from a functional view point there is no advantage, however the cosmetic advantage is obvious I admit!
2) the potential for packaging errors is increased. 3) the tooling cost and maintenance goes up. But, I accept your point.

I would like to point out that the ball stud can be mounted on either side of the plate bracket, and that the end fittings on the actuator can be rotated to accomodated the mounting change.

The ball stud on the transom bracket can only be mounted on the outside however it can be flipped over is required.

I know - this is not covered in the instruction!

Most important is how they perform and I hope you are happy, if not call us and we will be happy to help.

Thanks for the input!

I would have done just that, except the instructions specifically said to install the ball stud on the left side of the tab bracket.

I just went out and reversed the tab mounted ball joint and flipped the transom bracket. Everything stayed square, the original tab deployment angle was unchanged but the cylinder is now about 5/8th" out of centerline. I wonder if that is ok. It sure looks better with both cylinders on the inside of the brackets.

I noticed the left-right thing too when I installed my tabs. Since everything else is symmetrical on my transom, it would have been nice to have the tabs symmetrical too.
But they still look pretty cool and you would have to be really observant to notice the difference.
