Smart Tabs on a Hyperlift hull

My boat is a 2004 Xpress X54 with a Yamaha Four-Stroke 115. The Xpress Hyperlift hull does not angle sharply down, but instead angles down in steps with each step being at a slight angle. Each step is not as wide as the recommended SmartTab for my boat. Would the SmartTabs mount on this style transom? If so, would they mount flush with one of the steps even though, when the hull steps down, it would no longer be flush with the bottom of the boat? Or would the tabs mount at the same angle as the overall descent of the hull but above the bottom of the transom?

Hyperlift;

Can you e-mail a picture? If so E-mail to info@Nauticusinc.com. Basicaly you are on the right track. Pic a location the is the most representative angle of the hull bottom. You did not mention the distance between these strakes and steps in the hull. This info would be helpfull.

Re: Smart Tabs on a Hyperlift hull

I forgot to mention my boat is 17ft long with a beam of 81 inches and 54 inches across the bottom. I'm not quite sure if the tabs would correct my problem. I have to trim my motor all the way in to get out of the hole well, and I can only trim out about an inch at about 30 mph before the boat starts porpoising. The boat runs best when I break about the 40 mph mark. At that speed, the boat gets up on back few feet and I can trim the motor substantially further out than at slower speeds, but I do a lot of river fishing, and I rather run slower than 40 mph because of the chance of hitting submerged structure. The boat also seems to porpoise more than normal in long rolling waves even with the motor trimmed all the way in. Again, the boat performs well at higher speeds, but I can't run at very high speeds when I encounter those long waves. I like to run the boat at about half throttle at a speed of about 32-34 mph @ 3500 rpm, however, at WOT I run about 60 mph @ 5800 rpm, but the boat starts a slight chine walk. I normally back off the throttle before it gets any worse. Would the tabs help the chine walking, and would they take any off my top end speed? Would the tabs cause the bow to dig in at midrange speeds (about 40-50 mph) when the water pressure hasn't built up to that of higher speeds? None of these problems are to the degree of those that I have read about in other posts and articles, but I'd like to get the best performance out of the boat at the low-end, midrange, and top-end speeds. I don't plan on taking on 8 foot seas, but I want a ride in about 3 foot seas that won't shake the boat apart or give me premature back problems.

Re: Smart Tabs on a Hyperlift hull

Hyperlift;

You have a classic specialty hull situation. Many boat manufacturers and Dealers and boat owners are stuck on trying to use the prop, or the hull design to compensate for all of the varing conditions. Can't be done! If the hull is rigid ( all of them are) then they will perform best a some given speed and set of conditions. The performance will degrade on either side of the "design window".

Trim Tabs (of any kind) offer a flexable and/or adjustable section of the hull that allows for a larger window of efficient operation.

The tabs will correct all of your problems and without degrading any of the positive points including speed.
