smart tabs and strakes

I just got a set of the smart tabs sx for my 17 foot maxum open bow. The install DVD that came with them shows the guy mounting them "3-5 inches" from the outer edge of the transom. On my boat this will put the tab right behind a strake. Does it matter much? I could move them closer to the center, kinda between 2 strakes, but it seems to me they would work best closer to the edge of the transom, like the instructions say. Will a strake in front of them reduce their effectiveness? I've read nothing but good about these things and I just want to get it right. (and take off the ugly broken whale tail) Thanks all

Nope,... Not at All...

They're trim tabs, not transducers....
