Ok, im thinking of buying this motor. It was brought and left here for me to check out. It runs but stalls out after a few.

Firstly, i think its a Johnson or Evinrude, buy looking at the fuel pump. It looks like the same as my 15hp Evinrude had, so thats whats making me think im in the right place.

Model #J3REDS, The tag also says 96 on it in one spot. I assume its a 96?

Its a small motor. He said he thinks its a 5hp. It has an internal tank and can hook to an external tank, thats what i ran it on (external). The problem is, the petcock for going off/internal/external is not marked and doesnt look like a stock thing. Looks like it was added on. So i dont know what way is what way.

Its 2 cylinder and water cooled, its pumping water fine.

I need some info on this puppy. Fuel mix would be good to start off with. I ran it on 50:1 that i already had mixed.

Edit...

Oh yeah, also, this motor doesnt seem to have any reverse. The side lever only seems to have forward or nutruel.

J3reds
Johnson
r=rope start
3hp
E=9 D=6 therefore its a 1996
s= production run

No reverse on that model
50:1 is correct

Sounds like someone rigged it up to run on an external tank, as I believe that was not available from factory on that model.

Re: Small outboard info

Howdy Rookie.

Use .030 gap for all-round use.

If you do extensive low speed operation and get some plug fouling, go to .040.

Good luck. :)

Re: Small outboard info

Not having a good time with this, and it aint even mine yet. Id like to buy it if i can get it running. Soon as the guy brought it here, it fired right up, but then i think it fouled out or died because of no fuel. Someone rigged it with a petcock and it doesnt say what tank is what petcock setting. I pulled a fuel line and figured out what the petcock settings are for off/internal/external. Went and got 2 new plugs, compared to old ones and the old ones where burnt to smithereens with twice the gap.

Put in the new plugs and it sounded like it wanted to start for a million'th of a second on the first pull and i couldnt get it to do anything after that. Has very strong spark on both plugs too.

Took the bowl off and its clean and getting fuel.

Dont know what else to try

Re: Small outboard info

Ok, i think the carb needs to be cleaned because its not getting fuel into the cylinders at all.

I pulled the plugs and im not getting anything on my fingers. I think i should after pulling and pulling and pulling with my fingers over the cylinder holes?

I know its getting fuel into the bowl, but dont seem like its getting it into the cylinders.

What will i need and what should i be looking for while rebuilding this carb? Any tips greatly app.

Started to pop off the fuel pump cover and its got lots a presure.

Re: Small outboard info

Since you have not bought it yet, you could just tear down the carb and clean it out with some carb cleaner and blow it out with compressed air. Put her back on there and see how it goes. To verify that it will run, mix up a 50:1 mixture in a spray bottle and shoot some in the carb throat and crank it over. It should fire and run for a few seconds anyway. Then if you do get it running after cleaning the carb, it would be best to get a rebuild kit and do it right.

Re: Small outboard info

does it have a choke? Maybe that (or whatever enrichment thingy it has) is not working. You do have the throttle bumped up for starting, right? I dunno how big a rookie you actually are, but I know that for some of my motors if the starting procedure isn't correct it can lead to a lot of pulling (or cranking with a key), with no go. On the other hand, if done the right way, they'll fire right up. It's usually knowing the particular engine and how much choke it needs, versus flooding it. It does sound like your carb might be clogged, maybe try spraying some premix directly into the carb, and see if it stays running. (?)

good luck,

Brnet

Re: Small outboard info

It ran when it first got here, probably from whatever was left over in the jets. It only ran for a few minutes and then it like started to die and the plugs looked fouled.

The carb kit is only 18 bucks and in stock. I think spraying into the carb would be a good idea to see.

Im gonna do that and see for sure. Then ill make an offer to this clown for far less than the asking price.

Thanks

BF, reply....

Yes it has a choke. It is working and i have tried to give it all kinds of settings on the throttle while pulling.

Yesterday i took the bowl off the carb, it was full with fuel. While i had it off, i put a small hose on the fuel nipple and blew threw it while turning the mix knob and it is infact working.

Ill go see if i can spray into the carb and if it tries to run. Will post results back,

Thanks

Re: Small outboard info

Realrookie, sounds like you're not a "real" rookie. ;) Not like my neighbour who ran his new-to-him runabout around the lake for 40 min's or so until it died and then he killed the battery trying to re-start it. He got a tow in, and spent an hour with the cowl off headscratching before someone asked if he'd checked the gas. There was none. With some gas (we made sure he knew there was supposed to be oil mixed), it ran great. You should give up your handle to someone who deserves it more.

Brent

Re: Small outboard info

Im a rookie to all this boating stuff. Was confined to a canoe last year...as Stone Cold would say, "ught ugh"! I got a 12 foot me, the kids and the wife are going to enjoy this year.

I am however pretty good with car repairs and engines, the basics. I just got done pulling and putting in a rebuilt tranny in my wifes 94 voyager, plus all the bad front end parts like, struts and uppper bearings, ball joints, brakes and wheel bearings, plus more junk.

I cant get out on a lake if i tried. We have some snow here in Ct and i plow when it visits. Im a warmer weather fella!

I just went out and it fired right up with the spray technuiqe(sp)! I let it run for a while off the internal tank, which i put fresh mix into, and it ran for a while. I turned the petcock off and a few minutes later it died. I had to restart it with the spray bottle or i might have been pulling for while.

Gonne let it sit for a night and see if it will restart on its own. If it doesnt, whats this all mean?

Re: Small outboard info

So are you saying it was running on it's own until you cut the fuel supply to it? If so, I would look into the choke a little more and I would still rebuild the carb and replace the fuel pump. But it does sound like good news..

Re: Small outboard info

Yes, after it started it ran untill a few minutes after i shut off the fuel. I wanted to be sure it would die with the fuel set to off since the petcock is not marked. The choke is working and was completly open for this start.

There is alot of carbon build up in this motor, i can see it on the piston tops. Ive read here how to get rid of it and i will as soon as buy it, if im sure i want it and he accepts my offer. I think the owner put some oil in the cylinders for storage. I had it sitting on the bench and there was some black icky fuel smelling gunk oozing out the exhaust.

Im sure the fuel pump is working good. I went to pop off the top of it this morning and it released pressure with fuel.

Going to let it sit in the basement and try to get it going tomorrow.

Re: Small outboard info

By the way, it sounds like we're similar in the mechanical inclination department... I've got more experience wrenching on my OB's than you do, but I'm certainly no outboard guru - how's that for a warning... (that's what I come here for :p )

If it continues to run for minutes after starting with the spray bottle, then the jets are not completely clogged, but I think it's likely that the choke/enrichment circuit whatever is not working.

If you get it running until it's nicely warmed up, does it restart OK? (if so, that would again point to the choke).

You are running it in a barrel or on muffs right?

If you make it yours, as RB suggests, I'd still do a carb rebuild...

Lastly, not be a downer, 'cause if you'd be getting a GREAT deal on the 3 hp, then OK... BUT, here's my unsolicited $.02... for a 12 footer with wifey & kids I think you'd be much happier with a 9.9 on the back (or even a 15 hp if it's rated for it). If it were me, and $$$ was a consideration (which it always is), I'd much rather have an older, good condition 9.9 Johnson/Evinrude than a newer 3 hp. HP size would be #1 with me, and age and even make is secondary.

Of course, you could use the 3 hp on your canoe too... but if that's not a big consideration, I'd much prefer to buy something that would be able to get the 12 footer up on plane (at least with one or two people in it). A 12' boat with a 9.9 is just one of those great combo's... like bread and butter, but that just IMHO.

good luck.

Brent

Re: Small outboard info

I shut it down with the kill switch a few times and it start on first pull with EASE every time.

I took off the prop, have it in a barrel and the inpeler is working fine. I get a nice stream out the **** hole that gets stronger as the revs go up. This looks like it would take special muffs.

my goal is a 6hp because of the small lake i fell in love with last year. Its a 6hp 6mph lake. Not only that, there is another place i plan on spending some time that requires a 7 1/2hp max.

I had a 15hp my dad gave me and i sold it for a HUGE profit because my boat is only rated for a 10, and again, i want a 6. Before that, my buddy sold his little crawdad and he offered me the 2hp the buyer didnt want, so i bought that and sold it for double. Now, this motor is for sale, but i can atleast get out there if it doesnt sell. I already have a party interested in it, and i hope i can off it, if not, ill be able to go fishing atleast and have a way out if my battery dies.

I wont be taking kids or the wife everytime out. I will probably be alone more than having a partner.

Makes perfect sense... a good little 3 hp would be a good fit (until a nice 6 comes around)

good luck...

Brent

Re: Small outboard info

Oh yeah, Rookie was taken when i joined.

Motor started with a few pulls while playing with the choke. Took almost no choke for it to get going. Running great. If i end up keeping it ill have to do some tune up stuff, first ill see if i can make a quick profit off it.

Thanks for all the help fellas
