hi there 1979 cruiser with a alpha one and mercruiser 228 5.0 I think the previus owner never change the outdrive before I replace the water pump and the impeller on the lower unit, everything working fine but I drain my oil the other day and I find a lot of small metal particles in the oil what should I do send the upper unit for service or buy a new unit I been reading about sei drives they have a good price but what about their quality thanks again!!!

You didn't mention if there is a problem with the sterndrive.
Time between gear lube changes and type of operation must be considered to determine if amount of metal is significant.
Try synthetic, refill, observe.

hi there I change the oil and use synthetic and after that used the boat around 15 hours and I see a big amount of metal on the oil when I drained yesterday. and the outdrive works fine I just trying to prevent a damage.

If by "metal" you mean, well, METAL, then I would think something major is wrong and is about to cause a catastrophic failure. If by "metal" you mean a lot of fine, black carbon type of residue on the magnet, then it might be "normal."

Regarding the Sterndrive Engineering units, I have installed a couple of them and am very impressed with their quality.

hi there and thanks for your help hey I see a lot of fine, black carbon type of residue on the magnet,another question do you know how much will be like to send my outdrive for service that mean replace bearing, seals, uJoints etc or is better expend the money for a new outdrive thanks

Service costs vary from place to place. You would be best off asking around there in Ft Lauderdale. (Nice town by the way - I lived there for 13 years ;) ). If all you have is the black "dust" then I think you will be fine.
