What have I got here? 2 cylinder, 2 cycle, direct drive (always in forward gear on pull), ser # 656237, Mod. HD-25. would like to know: year? HP? and anything else you might have to offer. plan to use this as a kicker. Also need operating/maint. manual.

Re: Small Johnson Seahorse

thank you, trent...now where would be a good place to find the manual that relates to this motor? also, is the fuel mix 50 to 1, as usual; and is it water cooled? (i don't see any water intake vents on the lower unit).

Don't fire it up with 50:1. The fuel mix is either 24:1 or 16:1
So wait till you know for sure.
There are many here with a wealth of knowledge on these oldies.
They will be along shortly.

You have one of the nicest running fishing motors ever made. It is watercooled and has a round rubber water pump impeller with a tab on it that is activated by an eccentric cam on the propshaft. I understand that Sierra makes these impellers as aftermarket parts. Contact the Antique Outboard Club for copies of the manual and more info.

http://www.aomci.org/aomc.htm

Re: Small Johnson Seahorse

The original fuel:eek:il mix was 16:1, a half pint of oil per gallon of gas. With today's better oils, 24:1 works well, but do not go leaner that that because there are no bearings in the motor, just bushings. If there is a lot of internal wear due to the age of the outboard, then you may find it idles better with the richer mix.

Re: Small Johnson Seahorse

i will go with the 24:1 mixture and see how that works. don't have a manual as yet, but took out the plugs; (2) J8J champions. found out that J4C or J6C were probably used in this model. Is there any significant difference in any of these plugs or can i just go and get a new pair of J8J's. maybe J8J replaced J4C/J6C? i suppose i'll go with the same gap as well, unless someone has better info. thanks.

Originally the plugs were either J8J or J6J, either will work. I'm working from memory here, so go with the J8's. Set the gap to .025"
