I have a 1990 25 HP Johnson tiller model with electric start. I am installing a small electric switch panel in the boat for lights, horn etc. I would like to install a Tach on this panel but I don't know what I would wire it into. Is this possible?
Thank you for any help.

It sounds like what you want is a "tiny tach" made by "Design Technology Inc".
Their phone is (630)920-1300.
They have digital tachs that are very easily installed. One ground wire and wrap the other wire around the sparkplug wire. The screen is small and can very easily be fitted onto or inside a dash board.
If you want to know more about this tiny tach just google Tiny-Tach.

Can I assume your motor has an alternator to charge the battery? If so, most any of the modern outboard tachs will work. They count the A.C. pulses from the alternator. They connect to one of the yellow alternator wires and ground. And another wire to +12 volt (normally the ignition switch, or a toggle switch if no ignition switch).

Then you need to know how many poles or pulses per revolution your motor has. Probably 10 poles/5 pulses. Most tachs have a switch on the back to select.

The Tiny Tach might be just what I need. Looked them up and they are easy to install and reasonable. Thanks for the help. I kept searching for the grey wire I see people discussing here but I can't find one on my motor. Thanks again for the help.

Depending on which electric start version and wiring harness that you have, there may not be a grey tach wire included. If not, connect a wire for the tach sensor lead to the yellow-grey rectifier wire connection.

IF your motor does not have a rectifier, then you will have to use a Tiny-Tach.
