Howdy, I've got my little '58 18HP Fast Twin that I'm currenty in the middle of re-assembling.
It's electric start, choke,etc.
I got a nice wiring diagram from Capt. Paul (many thanks again!)
I have an electric connector on this motor that I'd like to re-use or replace Electric Interface.I've never seen one of these before. It appears to be all one piece molded plastic, with no way to replace just one or two connectors or cables. My problem is that the positive cable to the starter is rotted pretty badly.Anybody got any info on this thing or at least an OMC part number? I know Sierra carries a lot of goodies that I can't find anywhere else, but they appear to come up with a big zero when I do a search.

You'll have no luck finding one. Best to bypass the entire thing and hard-wire it.

those fastwins are great motors, i have a 66 fastwin which is simmilar to that and the go like a cut snake on a 12 foot aluminium tinnie. one thing to be carefull with on those motors it that when change gears that you idle it back way past the shift lettering as they have a weak gearbox and are prone to slip when they have been mistreated (acording to the old omc mechanic in sydney)

Hi,

It's a pretty common old motor. I'd go to http://www.tcoutboard.com, that's Twin Cities Outboard, and give their number a call and ask. I'd be willing to bet they have one of these available. It might not be cheap, but I think it would be better than cobbling up something.

Their phone number and email address are on their home page, and they're just about the biggest outboard recycling center anywhere.

It's tough to find something they don't have.

Actually, looking at the wire you show, I think you can repair this. It looks like most of the insulation near the connector isn't too bad. Check Radio Shack for heat shrink tubing that will fit this wire. Carefully tape the broken section, then add the heat shrink stuff. You may have to crimp on a new connector to the starter.

I wouldn't give up on this. If the smaller wires also have cracked insulation, you should be able to do the same to them. It would be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new connector from Twin Cities Outboard.

If it were me, I'd fix this one myself.

Thanks!
I'm gonna try the heat shrink tubing. From the motor end,the only cable that's bad is the positive to the starter. On the other end,the female connector, the wiring is all crap from the connector to the solenoid and the all the way back to the ignition switch. That's all got to be replaced, but no big deal.I think..

Right you are. It's easy enough to replace the other wires. The ones inside the canopy, though, are a bit tougher, and I doubt you can get a new connector.

I'd try to save this one, frankly. It doesn't look all that bad. A little tape and the heat-shrink tubing should work a treat.

Re: Small Electrical Issue

Okay.It looks like the connector is toast.I was actually trying to integrate new wiring into the other end of the thing that connects to the starter solenoid wiring.(the female end of the connector). All of the wiring just crumbled inside of the connector and the rubber on the connector itself is dry rotted beyond hope.Any chance a trailer wiring pig-tail would work or are the wires too small a gauge to support that kind of juice?
Anybody got ideas for a quick connect/disconnect? I don't want to have to hard wire it.I'll be taking the motor off of the transom too often for that.A small panel would do,but it's not exactly what I would call "quick disconnect".

I'd try Twin Cities Outboard. Just google them. I'd be willing to bet they have the stuff on hand for you, and in good condition.
