My Northwest Jet with a 150 propped yamaha does 2.8 mph at an idle with trim tabs down. 3.06 mph with tabs up. how do you get a boat to slow down as docking this thing is a pain at 3 mph. boat is a 21' aluminium forward helm type of boat. prop is a 17 pitch x 14 diameter.RPM's are right at 6-700. motor is a 2008 model 4 stroke. any help?

You just put it in neutral and coast. Bump the throttle to get a bit more speed. Bump it into reverse to stop.

Yup, all you can do is op it out of gear, you need to kind of geuasss waht it will take to make the dock, if you are short bump it into gear if you are too fast bump it into reverse.

Pratice practice practice, unfortunately you are going have to take the boat out every single day until you get it!

Good suggestions that will help you alot if you can practice with no one around. And I'd have the carb settings checked, idle speed may be a tad too high.

Dropping idle RPM might help, but be careful, too low and you risk it stalling. I would rather have too much RPM than a non running motor.

Is this a jet boat? If thats the case, is there really an in and out of gear like a standard boat?

NW jet is just a type of boat, they make hulls designed for outboards as well as jets... Given that he listed prop specs, its a conventional outboard...

Yeah, jets are easy to slow down! No transmission, just drop the reverse bucket until you hit 'neutral'. Drop it a little further and its reverse. Nice part is you can do that at any speed. And in neutral you still retain steering control.

Re: slowing down a boat?

Thanks guys, in and out of gear is what I have been doing. I have one other question. The throttle controls on this boat are very tight making small throttle adjustments very difficult. When the cables are disconnected at the motor the controls are nice and smooth. hand operating the throttle at the engine is doable but tight. seems that the plastic levers that operate the 2 carbs habe a double spring that is very tight. any adjustments on this?
