slow shifting

I have a 1986 Larson with a mercurser MCM 228 motor. I recently had problems with it stalling when coming out of reverse. I took it to the shop and repaired it. On the second time out I started having some problems. It no longer stalls coming out of reverse but I had a lag in shifting out of forward or reverse. When I put the lever into neutral the drive is engaged for 5 or 10 seconds after shifting to neutral. Any advice as to what could be causing this and how to fix it? Besides being a pain what damage can this cause? There is no grinding or anything when it finally shifts.

Thanks
John

Re: slow shifting

I am not familiar with your engine and you didnt say what kind of drive you have but it sounds like youre shift cable isnt properly adjusted.
Go make sure its within specs, and post your drive model.

Re: slow shifting

Have you talked to the people who did the first repair? That should be the first thing you do before you start doing any adjustments yourself. Give them the opportunity to correct the problem...

Re: slow shifting

You may have a 228 motor, but what outdrive do you have? That's where the problem is.
And the 228 motor was only used till 84.
