OK I am trying figure out what is going on with my boat now.
Below is a link to my resto thread but I''l post the drive question here as well
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=281276
To start the boat is a 1980 Sea Ray 270 SDB powered by a Merc 260 Alpha one combo with a mystery prop.
When I was out on the weekend I suddenly had a surge in rpms with a drop in speed. Some suggestions have been that its is either the engine coupler or the prop hub. So my question is how can you tell which? I was able to return to the launch on my own and there isn't any rubber bits in the bilge. Also the engine temps and oil pressure didn't change and there wasn't any noise out of the drive while coming back.

Thanks.

Mine had a rubber squeak when i cranked engine so coupler was shot, pulled outgrive and you could see the melted rubber and smell it at back of boat.
motor will overheat because impeller wont be turning but engine will.

Or just put on your spare prop.
