I am sure some of you have seen this on another boating website but there is good advice to be found here. I was wondering what you thought of the below:

The wife and I were talking this weekend. We stayed at a nice marina with good rates ($210/month for 30 foot slip + electric) and we decided that we will slip the boat so we can just get on and go. I have never slipped a boat before. I am assuming the below are a good idea but if you have any input or things you have learned than please let me know.

*Bottom paint
*Teflon tape around drain plug and give it a good tug with a wrench
*Replace transducer mount (currently screws with 5200 with Starboard and seal original holes
*Reseal swimplatform lights
*Extra shore power cord (leave one at dock and have one for when we stay the night someplace else)
*Good water hose filter for filling tank
*Fresh water flush kit for motor
*Seacock for outdrive water hose

Have a barrier coat applied before the new bottom paint. Gel coat can absorb water and allow blistering unless the hull is layed up with vinylester resin or protected with a epoxy based barrier. There are a few options but interlux interprotect is probably the most popular.

Fresh anodes, Anti fouling paint for the outdrive A slip would be awesome versus the trailering that you have been doing. Even if you don't go out for a cruise, you can just hang out on the boat and talk smack with you 'slip buddies'. :)

Best option for slipping a boat like yours is a good lift. Otherwise, a properly applied barrier coat and bottom paint along with well maintained anodes.

Yup that is the idea. Just drive to the boat, get on and go or sit at the dock and hang out with the slip buddies. Some how I have a feeling when Bonus and stock payouts happen next spring it may lead to a larger boat....

I thought you were already slipping your boat.
We moved it to a storage place at the marine, now we want to slip it. We went out crusing last weekend, found a great marina that we spent the night at. $210/month for 30 foot slip + electric.

That's not a bad price. I own a dock at a marina in a lake in So Cal and the ones that get rented go for $2300/season which is April through mid October. Monthly is $700

Hey Bruce, That sounds great! Which lake are you talking about? There aren't any I know of with actual marinas and rentable slips down as far south as I am (San Diego). It's all state reservoirs or salt water.

Not trying to be a downer .......... but at that price I would prolly check the marina out on a Saturday afternoon/evening, sometimes the lower price comes at a cost of being surrounded by people you would rather not be surrounded by............... just sayin

Yeah, I see what you are getting at. The marina does not have any bad reviews. It is a bit on the "blue collar" side of things, not saying that is bad. They let people work on their boats, lots of blow-boaters etc. The other place is more like a country club. If you have your hatch open you chance someone coming over to make sure you are not changing your own oil.

We spent Saturday night at the marina, left about Sunday. Nice people, did not see any issues. The boats there were all decent ranging from a new 58 foot Searay fly bridge 70's sail boats that are just slip based weekend homes for some people.

The thing I would worry the most about a slip is security. Is there a locked gate going down to the slip? What is the other security? Where my boat is docked, there are key codes to get to the slips but first you have to get my an attendant into the parking lot or with a card key after and before hours.

I don't think I have seen any Marinas in NC that have the whole gate thing. They all just seam to be open access.

That sounds like a great deal, we are paying scarcity value here in the Rockies at circa $1,800 per slip for a 4 1/2 month season.

Slips are an incredibly nice indulgence and not only buy you convenience, but also provide shelter and ultimately lead to more hours on board. Security can definitely be an issue, so we try to stow and cover any meaningful items, and otherwise take valuables. Canvas and good dockmates can go a long way to help keep unwanted thieves off your boat, and solar powered motion activated lighting can also help if your marina doesn't have it's own security barriers.

Not only do I have the gate but there is a remote control camera that I can log into that is pan/tilt/zoom that I can check out my boat.

Also remember that 'slipping a boat' is better than 'slipping on a boat' :D (sorry)
